Thanks for reading! I think Faulk would likely command a bit more term, based on his age and production rates. I'd bet on six years as a minimum but who knows.

Faulk will likely be traded, depending on how the team is positioned near the deadline.

Ultimately he's going to get far more money as a UFA than the Canes would be willing to give him, especially with Hamilton and Pesce already on the roster.

The front office has made a point of saying they'll pay for young players with big talent, but they don't want to give bigger contracts to guys who are hitting or have hit UFA status and aren't elite. Overpaying a little for the age 28+ years of a guy like Faulk is where teams usually find themselves getting into cap trouble.

This means the trade value will most likely be minimal (based on the fact that
he will essentially be arental for some team.

That's fine. The return isn't necessarily a huge issue so long as you've done a good job of stocking up and having replacements on the way.

Ultimately what you want is young guys pushing the guys ahead of them guys out of the lineup by the time they're reaching UFA status so you can toss them aside once the risky contract time comes.

If they deal Faulk and don't get a D in return. Is it Mckeown or Bean making the jump first?

Also, Ben. great stuff, canes are a fun team to watch and talk about. glad there's a blogger now

Bean. I don't know if McKeown will ever be a full tim NHL D

But Gustav Forsling is probably in before Bean on the left side.

Slavin - Hamilton
Fleury - Pesce
Forsling - TVR
Bean

Yeah, that's the direction I see it going as well. I imagine they'll be able to get a 1st and a prospect back if it's a deadline move.

just a great back end still. Do you think they'll be bringing Williams back? In the playoffs he still looked like he had some life left in the tank. Gotta like their chances for a run again this year.

Personally I'd like to see McKeown get a shot before Forsling. McKeown has been dominant in Charlotte playing a game similar to Pesce's. He's been in the system for a while and would mesh with others better than an outsider like Forsling. I want to see what he can do at the next level.

Would be good to see what he could do with an extended look in the NHL for sure. Would mean five RHD in the top-six though if he's playing instead of Fleury/Forsling.

On Faulk, He had a good season last year but was a little off the prior two seasons. If he can be extended at a reasonable price and term I would be okay with it, but do not have a problem selling high at the trade deadline for other assets if he is asking for too much. He is arguably #4 on the depth chart for defenseman behind Hamilton, Slavin and Pesce. Having too much money and term tied up on a #4 defender is like having too much tied up on a 3rd line forward. It doesn't pay off in the long run.

At this point it's up to him.

I think he'll be back, but if he does return, it likely means somebody like McGinn or Martinook get moved out.

At least they got something for Skinner. I’m sure his NMC affected the return for that trade. No way would I want his current 9mil... sorry just gagged a bit, contract on the books. Likewise with Faulk anything more than 6 is an overpay with how the roster is built. At some point there’s got to be some odd man out in Raleigh over the next couple years with several guys in Charlotte looking ready to make that jump. If you have a guy that’s ready down in Charlotte what’s the harm in packaging a couple of bottom 6 forwards with Faulk to get a higher end forward on the roster and open up a space for said AHL player. Also with an expansion draft coming I don’t see any way we protect Faulk over the other 3. Unless he’s our expansion bait?

The Skinner contract is rough for sure. Agreed though that Faulk is likely the odd man out.
