Todd Cordell: New Jersey Devils sign Connor Carrick to two-year extension

Fine with this deal. I like what Carrick brought to the team when he came over and they need the depth after the Subban trade. Smith and some combination of Mueller/Carrick could be sneaky good on the third pairing against weaker competition.

I like the deal i just hope this does not prevent Reilly Walsh from wanting to sign this year or next, I hope that kid does not do a butcher

I always had high hopes for Carrick when he was with the Leafs. Coming out of the AHL he felt like a high end third pairing kinda guy. Just another guy Babcock liked to keep in the press box though.. there's been a few of them.

Is walsh done with college? I thought he wanted to finish?

I remember this as well. I always though he played steady and definitely had a positive effect when he was on the ice. Can do a little bit of everything.

Do we still have a spot for P.K. on the back end after this signing?

He's going into his junior year this season. He will likely stay for his senior year next year too, and he probably needs it for the best of his development unless he takes a massive step forward this year

Swimming in cap... seems like Butcher and Zacha will command more than enough and you need to resign some serious pieces next year to try to get a 6-7 guy in at a mil. I like him though, always thought that was a solid trade

It’s an important contract for Carrick. He’ll either establish himself as a NHLer with the Devs or never make it.

Clearly we have given NCAA players way too much choice. Worked in our favor with Butch, but the hobey baker sweepstakes is getting ridicules and needs to be addressed by the league. Expecting Shero to release Carrick in hopes of "holding" a roster spot for a non-committed NCAA player is just not part of his job.

Time for a back-door deal! Butcher gets a 1 year, 9M deal. In exchange, he extends immediately at 1M AAV over the following 7 seasons. Same goes for Zacha.

Doesnt this equate to 16 mil over 8 years? which is 2 a year. Im sure he's getting 4-6 per year.

I like the signing. Will be great for our defensive depth. If he does continue improving and proves to be a solid 5-6, perhaps it makes trading Vats much easier. I'm still stuck in the middle on trading Vats or resigning him. I just don't know lol

What if Hughes becomes our Kucherov... 100 pts a season. Hughes does slick, unexpected passing so he needs a winger that can rip it from anywhere on the ice, I think.
