It's not about blind loyalty. You can be critical of the team while still remaining a fan. There is nothing the Flyers as a team can do, short of becoming a drug running front of some other bizarre action that could stop me from being a Flyers fan. It's in my blood and my DNA. Until death.
- MJL

To me the above sums up being fan perfectly. Perfect. =)

We all disagree with the steps they are taking but when August rolls into Sept and I start seeing stories about players coming to town for camp, the ice going down at the arena then I start feeling that normal excitement because the Flyers will be back soon..

Doesn't mean that I can't be be critical.
I hate that they are the softest team in the league.
Hate that they haven't won a playoff series in years.
Dislike the Braun signing

None of that changes the fact that I am a Flyers fan.

Not true. Just because I don’t have blind loyalty? The team has changed. If what made me love them has changed then why should I be as dedicated?

I will always be a fan. I just don’t know if I will continue to leave and breath flyers hockey. Maybe Bills blog and the occasional nationally televised games will be my limits. I don’t know.

so your hardcore fandom came from the philosophy of the front office? thats a stark contrast to my hardcore fandom. i mean it would be nice if Snider was still alive running it, but why does what the higher ups do be your end all be all to be a flyers fan?

Great blog.

If only Homer had been able to talk Snider off the ledge over the Bryz deal. At least the Flyers got lucky with the compliance buyouts and aren't stuck paying cap recapture penalties like Vancouver are.

2 years for Dzingel with Carolina. 3.4 million per. Drastic overpay for a guy who only scored 26 goals last year.
- PLindbergh31

Not as much of an overpay as what the Rags gave Trouba.

Wait, he's still not signed yet and has an arbitration date scheduled for July 25th.

My level of fandom, if you will, has shifted. From about 18-28, I would make plans around Flyers games. If it was a mid-January game against Florida or a late April game against Pittsburgh, I would make sure I was able to watch. I had season tickets from 05/06 - 14/15. I wore Flyers shirts constantly.

But when they hired Hakstol, I PERSONALLY didn't like the team. I PERSONALLY felt they were very vanilla; not bad, just not as exciting as the Berube/Lavy teams. I found myself not needing to be around to watch every game. Coupled with my becoming a father, I didn't want to drop thousands on season tickets. I still followed the team, I still watched when I could, but that burning passion was quenched. I hope that can return.

You can sense the difference in the games. Even in 13/14 (their last really good season, to me), any big-time rival would have a constant buzz in the arena all game long. Now, if you go to a game, there's no buzz, no electricity, even in a (frank)ing playoff game against Pittsburgh (2018 Game 4). The team doesn't always to do their part to give them things to be excited about, either.

Hopefully this team can become exciting and bring back some of that atmospshere and stop being an afterthought in Philadelphia sports. I'll keep rooting for them for the rest of my life, but right now, they'll have to show me something to get me glued to the TV or back in their seats.

Great write up Bill. Homer as a GM was about average in a cap environment however he bleeds orange and black. It’d be nice to see a flyer player from the 90’s or 2000’s in the front office on track to pass the torch to so to speak to carry on the team’s legacy and best practices going forward

I was surprised the Rags went after Trouba. You know with Justin Braun available and all.

I think Toronto are the softest team in the league, but that's not why Boston beat them in the playoffs. The Bruins beat them with powerplay goals.

I'm much more concerned with the Flyers having the league's second worst PK over the past five years, than antiquated notions of toughness.

There is no doubt that the better the team is and more exciting they are, the more fun they are to watch. Also the more likely a fan is to purchase season tickets or take the family to a game. None of that stops a true fan from being a fan of the team and just walking away.

No doubt this isnt the NHL of even 10 years ago where every team had a tough element to them. Me personally I enjoy a team that has a few players that can hit or still play with that style when needed. While a team of defensively sound 200 foot players looks great when looking at metrics I just dont find that as enjoyable to watch.

I like the mix the Blues had this season with players that could do a bit of everything coupled with a goalie that really carried them. I would be okay with that for the Flyers.

The Rags traded Winnipeg's pick back to them and got Trouba. They sure did get taken to the cleaners.

Not to mention they got the # 2 pick in the lottery. I wonder how many years it will take Kakko to top 30 points. Probably half a decade.

A second round pick for a rental who was SJ's worst defenseman last year. That is impressive.

How good NHL coaches are with designing and coaching checking structure certainly has made the game less entertaining over the years.

They had 5 regulars who played the bulk of the games.

Burns
Karlsson
Vlasic
Dillon
Braun

The last defense spot was rotated amongst 2 or 3 guys.
So out of their 5 regulars who was worse than Braun?
