Good for them, but I would’ve waited until the deadline to make the announcement

Nothing is officially signed yet, so technically they could make the announcement and still wait until the last minute, no?

Why bother, MTL isn't prevented from acting on other players because of the Aho offer sheet. Making the announcement is more about CAR than it is about MTL, and getting it out of the way comforts CAR fan base, eh.

Take the full week - that 8.5 in cap space is untouchable for Bergevin until they formally match. I'm sure he's really popular in Raleigh right now...

With that 8.5 they sure are...once you have an offer in on a house you can't go down the street and put another one in...unless you want to end up with two houses.

Habs wouldn't be able trade those picks or offer sheet another player. Could hurt them if a trade came up.

Sure you can, all you need to be able to do is afford both houses. MTL have enough picks to get a low cap team to take Alzner off the books, or any other such contract. They could also move Drouin pretty quickly. Neither of these options are optimal, but they do exist.

Marner is next. Leafs are in a tight spot. Montreal would be stupid not to try again.

Them saying they will match is great, but it could also be leverage to get MTL to cough up a bigger compensation package. Until they file the paperwork with the league it's all just posturing

It's not.

They're holding a press conference with Aho, Dundon and Waddell at 1pm Eastern.

Entirely wrong. You must be in possession of the draft picks (your own) that support your offer. If the Montreal offer to Carolina remains on the table they cannot offer anyone another offer because they have already a contingent commitment on the necessary draft picks.

Once Carolina sign off on the matching offer, Montreal will be able to offer sheet Marner.

MTL can make offers using any combination of picks/players, as long as they hold the 2020 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks needed to complete the offer sheet. MTL has a ton of picks. It is all irrelevant as CAR appears to be matching this afternoon.

Try what? The offer was a joke. It was never going to work. The only way a team walks away from an offer sheet is if it is a major over payment.

This was not at over payment. Some actual thought he would sign for more.

The only reason this had even a 1% chance of working was because of the belief that Carolina couldn't pay the huge bonus. That will not be an issue with the maple leafs.

It's gotta be, right? I can't imagine Bergevin just walking away now that he's already started going down this path.

That is 100% wrong. To present an offer sheet you need to use your own picks. You can't use other teams picks you acquired in trades. Also you can't offer players as compensation. Once a player signs an offer sheet, the current players team 7 days which they can match, try work out a trade with you, or let the player walk. So instead of using the picks you can work out a trade using other picks and players, but the player needs to sign the offer sheet, and you need your picks to be able to do it.

I would bet Bergevin identified a few RFAs he was interested in. Aho was probably the one he like the most, once they officially sign him. He could do another offer sheet. And yes you can only have one at a time UNLESS these offers require different picks (offer sheet A requires 2nd round pick, offer sheet B requires 1st round pick) because only your own picks can be used.

Bergevin can spend all summer doing offer sheets for all I care. Even if everybody matches, other teams will still have 1-2 million less in cap space which is good for the habs. Players are happy about it. That's the point of being RFA. Your only leverage is the offer sheet. Sure teams can match. But if teams know they can't completely lowball their RFA at the risk of having to overpay with a matching offer sheet, you might get very different contracts negociated.

i wish someone would state the obvious. the habs new the hurricane would match. it was as bergevin said to show the habs they were serious, but it was not a serious offer. they cant sign free agents or he is nunwilling to really take a chance. i likw thw habs and the youth they have re the draft . but if thats your plan stick with it. dont paly the offer sheet game thatr we all know never really pans out. shore up the d and maybe if there left a veteran center
