Lemme guess....

"I don't get it" featuring a lengthy rant about Rutherford screwing the Penguins over and over again.

Maybe you should go write for one of the "I get it" teams you gushed over.

It's getting old.

Is Toronto better?

The D to me looks relatively the same. Sure you get Muzzin for a full season but replacing Gardiner with Barrie seems like a lateral move. Ceci is worse than Zaitsiev and still unsigned according to capfriendly. I thought i heard he did sign at 4.5 mill for 1 year. Marincin i dont know much about but all the leaf fans i know just ripped on him all last season. Then theres Justin Holl who rarely played and was made into a hockey fantasy joke.

Kadri was a good #3 C. It remains to be seen if AJ can fill that void.

You sure "Don't get it"....

Gushing over alol the "Improvements" the Leafs made?????
Yes. They did a decent job of shedding some salary....but....c'mon.

Out...Marleau, Kadri, Gardiner, CBrown, Zaitsev
In....Ceci, Spezza, Barrie....

I would hardly call that an improvement...actually, with all the young entry level players taht will have to fill the last few forward spots and Def 5-6-7.....I dunno....not much of an improvement to me.

I don’t remember who to give credit to but someone yesterday was 100% on the 💰 when they said that Pitt may not be a great landing spot for all these free agents and that they may just want to play somewhere else. The core is older than other cores and the GM is prone to making unwise decisions. I don’t think we can just assume that Panik (who signed for 2.75 not 2.5 so for the love of sweet baby Jesus stop saying 2.5) or anyone else would’ve come here for what they went to others for because maybe they just didn’t want to come here

The chance to play with Crosby or Malkin is one thing, but what happens to the players don’t mesh well? When talking about the Crosby/Malkin bump people are quick to point out all of these players (like Perron) who didn’t pan out and got shipped out of town. News flash in case you didn’t already know: these guys are people with families. They WANT to put down roots and stay in one place for a long time

Take Donskoi for example: he could’ve gotten the same money in Pitt, so are there maybe some reasons that he might not want to come here? He’s penciled in as 2RW over in COL and he’s more likely to stay in their top 6 than ours, they’ve got a younger core, they’re on the rise, Denver doesn’t suck, he may just prefer the west coast. Could be more reasons too, that’s just off the top of my head

I've come around a lot on the Tanev deal.

the player

Watching more highlights and reading more about him, he is a really good forechecker. I've long felt we've missed the guys like Kunitz who could dump the puck in and just go create chaos. Yes we have other bottom 6 guys but they're still pretty vanilla.

Take away the contract for a minute and we signed a pretty good player. Dont let the Johnson memory cloud your judgement...he was always bad. Most people seem to think Tanev will become a fan favorite relatively quickly.

the contract

Term is too long. But this is the going rate for really good role players ...Hagelin and Bonino both got $4M x 4 and that was a few years ago. Bonino was 29.

Of course there are numerous way worse examples like Jay Beagle getting $3M x 4 years at age 32.

So long story short, sucks to commit to the term but the AAV isn't unreasonable and he's actually a useful player. If GMJR made this move without Jack Johnson or Hunwick mistakes fresh in our brains...I think very few would have an issue with it.

AJ? You mean Spezza? I’m not trying to be snarky it just is what it is. I imagine he signed believing he would be playing center and getting PP2 time

He isn’t a FA, he would need to be traded for, how do you know JR didn’t try or that Vegas is even dealing him?

Oh yeah, your anti JR agenda.

You dont get it. You are not including the two RFAs they kept by making the movies. They count as "in" as well.

I don’t know if he did. But he god damn should have. And he should have tried hard. But he’s done poorly the last few offseasons so I’m not surprised. Weird that you think that I have an anti JR agenda as I have given him his credit at the beginning of his tenure when trading for Kessel, Schultz, Hags, etc. even as recent as the McCann and Bjugsta trade I think he did well in fixing the Brassard debacle. But his off-season moves have been atrocious.

You forgot Kerfoot .. and Shore .. and that the Avs retained 50% of Barrie's salary.

Again just harping on my own long post: so many of these players wanted to sign in these locations. Duchene wanted Nashville or MTL, Panarin and Trouba wanted NYR and everyone knew it, etc.

What RW is leaving out (hard to tell if he does it because it doesn’t fit his agenda or if he’s just dumb) is that offer sheets need to be signed by the player. Aho clearly felt this offer sheet was a good deal for him. He could’ve told MTL “I’m not signing it unless it’s for more money.” KK tweeted right after the extension that he loves TO and doesn’t want to be anywhere else - maybe that’s true! He and all these other RFAs got to speak with teams and maybe these teams tried like heck to get a Meier or a KK and the player just wasn’t having it

I disagree. The term matters if they decide to try and trade him (that’s why I call it a horrible contract). If he becomes expendable (which he should, because he’s a bottom 6 forward), his contract length could make it difficult to move.

There are a lot of really difficult contracts to move on the Pens if they have to.

JJ
Guddy
Hornqvist
Tanev

Not to mention whatever raises he’s going to give McCann and Bjugstad. Having contracts like the above 4 means that players with better value to the Penguins have to be moved to compensate for poorly constructed contracts.

While the depth looks good now at the moment, solid guys like Rust, Simon, etc. are going to have to be replaced because GMJR gave too much term to lesser players.

- j.boyd919

That's a good point about the contract being hard to flip even if he does live up to the dollar amount. Even I he lives up to the dollars, you still might want to move him for cap saving later and replace him with a cheap young player (ignoring they could do that now).

I'd say JJ is the worst contract, followed by Hornqvist's which will be nearly impossible to move (at least the buyout isn't horrible with JJ).

Then Tanev, which isn't as bad if it wasn't paired with Hornqvist and so you have almost 9M tied up in third line wings. That's more then what they'll pay for either Crosby or Malkin's wings.

Gudbranson, maybe I'm too optimistic on what I saw, but I think he falls between the second pair defenseman he played like an the disaster he's been and is a 3M defenseman and only has 2 years left, so I'm not as worried about that one even if it's a bad number, easy to get rid of guys once they have a year left.

Can I get the lottery numbers since you know what the future will bring?

All of JRs offseason moves are doing exactly what he said he was going to do and that’s change the culture of the Pens.
With a few tweaks and and the signing yesterday this is a brand new team, with a hard working attitude.

Forwards weren’t the problem last year. The defenses inability to move the puck is the problem. I’ve yet to see that addressed.

Don’t need to. Trade for his rights and sign him to that deal. That “gamble” is worth it for a guy coming from the KHL that outscored Panarin and Dadonov.

If they could get Gusev, would you be willing to move Galchenyuk if that was the only way to find the salary to make it happen? I would, think Gusev fits better because he can play Kessel's PP spot and has more upside

Would be two trades because Vegas is going to want cheap players or futures, but Galchenyuk would be an easy flip to recoup some of that.

Oh I would be 100% for this. I was making this pitch a week ago on here. I was replying to Wilson's comment under the Montreal analysis. He stated they have the room to offer sheet Gusev, but Gusev is not eligible for group 2 free agency therefor he isn't able to receive an offer sheet.
