Like I said, I believe they will match.

How did the Weber contract work out? Well he didn't stay a predator for the rest of his contract for sure.

Either way, I don't see how this ends up badly for the habs. If they don't match (which I would be surprised), they would be thrilled to have Aho for the picks involved. If they do match, Carolina, a wild card competition for the Canadiens, is in a worse salary position.

With all the picks Bergevin has in stock, I would be surprised we don't see more offer sheets for RFA. Event lower offers for only 3rd ou 2nd rounders could be made.

Point being most said Nashville had no chance of paying such a front loaded contract and Weber was surely a Flyer, but Nashville matched in the end for their star player.

I imagine the Canes are pretty pissed about the offer sheet and will have little interest in talking trade or anything with the Habs at this point.

i disagree. i don't think there will be any ill-will between Waddell and Bergevin. firstly, Waddell isn't a 13-year-old girl or Brian Burke. he'll get over his hurt feelings. secondly, Bergevin did Waddell a solid here. he's going to get this player at a reasonable cap hit long term through his most productive years, and won't have this nuisance of a contract stalemate dragging throughout the summer.

Dundon will no doubt be pissed but if you don't want to see your players targeted by cash rich clubs, don't buy a team in a small market.

Yeah.... they're just gonna match. It's a pretty pathetic offer sheet.
- BINGO!

Not really. The Habs are counting on the owner not willing to pay so much up front. Apparently, the Hurricanes are operating at a loss of over 3M per year.

Breakdown of Aho offer sheet: $11.3M SB plus 700k salary in Year 1; $9.87M SB plus 700k salary in Year 2; $6.95 SB plus 750k salary in Year 3; $5.25 SB plus $750k in each of Year 4 and Year 5

So how willing is the Hurricane's owner willing to operate at a loss greater than 3M per year? The owner is a billionaire and he knows Aho is his franchise player so yeah, I'm sure they match.

I see what you did there, but do you actually think he would sell shares in TopGolf in order to pay another business? So say he needs 20mil for Aho, he needs to sell 40mil worth of Topgolf shares since he owes taxes.
Then who buys those shares? Those people that want to buy his shares would have all the leverage on the price because he would be in a position of weakness.

The guy is worth 1.1billion, but that in no way means he has 1.1billion of liquid cash.

He's worth 1.1billion because if he sells all assets he owns, it's what they are valued at.

Callaway put in 54million in Topgolf and now could be valued at 600million.

So there's the bulk of what Dubdon is worth. It's an estimate and it's mostly in Topgolf.

He's still a millionaire, but not sure he's having fun throwing 14mil more than he planned to at 1 single player.

oh. i didn't selling shares was the only way to get cash out of a cash cow business.

btw. dundon bought topgolf in 2011.

He only owns 25% of TopGolf.

He also owns two office towers in downtown Dallas, a golf course on the PGA tour, a health insurance company, a couple of investment companies, a hotel in Aspen...

How much money he actually has is largely unknown because he's only recently become a public figure, though he did receive a cash payout of $713 million USD in 2017 to exit his subprime autoloan company, which he already receive a bunch of money for when he sold the thing to Santander in the first place.

He was vetted by the NFL a couple years ago when the Carolina Panthers were for sale and they considered him a candidate to own an NFL team, so... I don't think it's a real issue.

Yeah Dundon may be a bit pissy, but by all accounts the front office staff is pretty happy. That's a nice number for Aho, it's just not as long as they wanted to go.

if his net worth is 1.1B and and he can't come up with 1% of his value in cash to front aho's bonus for 10 months, he's got bigger problems.

lol exactly.

he'd have to have about 17 AAF sized debacles for everything to really fall apart.

They also have to buy out Patrick Marleau at 6M.

$3.83 is what the actually amount of money they had to pay was. And they already did it.

They didn't have to do it either, they'd just look like bumholes if they didn't.
