They can negotiate a parallel trade for the picks they’d receive if they don’t match. That way, it’s effectively a (something from Habs) for Aho trade. Seems quite unlikely, but certainly doable.

Despite having the cheapest owner in sports, I would be surprised if the Canes don't match.

so the canes offered him an eight year at $6M per year deal last week. He turned it down and then the news out of carolina was that he could be traded to montreal. Then montreal offers him this deal and the canes start with the "oh we would match any offer."

so they went from "take it or leave it" to "what do you mean you are leaving it?"

They can't match, and then trade. So make a trade that all sides agree voids the offer, or match it and pay the kid. Either way, Aho is playing in CAR or MTL.....no other options exist at this point.
