A UFA vs RFA?
- walshyleafsfan

Understood, but Marner situation is a different animal than most RFA’s. Dude was the leading scorer on the Leafs, if my memory serves me correctly, and they are paying others a sh!t load more. That’s why it’s taking so long.

Just my opinion.

Have you looked at the current crop of free agents available? I hope the canes take 2 months to match because there's sweet fcuk all that we should be spending money on anyways.
- 1993_Cup_Champs

It's not just UFA, you can't use the picks for trades as well, or the cap space. He has basically tied his hands for the next 7 days if the Canes wish to wait that long.

Just because someone is worth 1.1 billion, doesn't mean he 1.1 billion to spend. A lot of the time the money is tied up in stocks and other assets. Assets that they aren't probably willing to give up to pay an NHL players salary. Unfortunately for them, players salaries need to be paid in actual cash. Eugene Melnyk is worth a lot of money, but he definitely has a cash flow problem from all reports.

Handing out 20 million to one player over a 12 month span is still a lot of money, even for a guy worth 1.1 billion.

Here are the gates numbers for the Canes

Yeah, Dellios. I’d be careful who you poke in the eye. Unless your some veteran MMA athlete, your challenge would seem to backfire!

So the canes can match in the last minute but in the meantime the habs have to leave that money tied up which means being stuck for a week
- Atarileaf

Stuck on what??? there is not one good free agent left out there

If I were the canes I'd wait the full 7 days then match. This will tie up Montreal's cap and there won't be any top players left for Montreal to sign in a week.

this is dumb, Aho is clearly worth that much if not more, pretty sure any team in the league would pay him that. Habs should have gone up a mill or 2... if they wanted a serious shot at getting him.
- MnGump

Do you even know what you are talking about?? The AAV means nothing to Carolina. They have oodles of cap space. It is the signing bonus that might prohibit them from matching. He offered as much signing bonus as he could. Please know your facts

They can't offer sheet anyone else in the meantime either

I am going to say this one last time. It doesnt matter about the AAV, if it was 8.5, 9. 9.5 or 10. Carolina has so much cap space to match. In other words that is not a problem for Carolina. IT HAS TO DO WITH THE SIGNING BONUS.. which is the most he could offer. That is the issue for Carolina, so can we stop with the AAV. My God it is not that difficult. As well the term is going to screw Carolina as well.

True, but other RFAs may hold off now that someone is out there willing to actually put a sheet out there. They can't sign one, but they can still talk to Montreal and work out a sheet to be signed if Aho gets matched.

You have to check the salary structure as well. Aho’s contract had over 21mil in bonuses in the first year hahaha. Carolina hasn’t made that much money last year haha
- koarik91

21M would be over the player maximum salary.

I don’t understand why the Habs wouldn’t offer more. It must’ve been known the Canes already offered Aho a deal in the same ballpark, so why do this? If he signs, the Canes literally get what they want and sign Aho for cheap
- Gray75

Offer more???? For what reason??? They have a ton of cap space to match.... it is the signing bonus that will be a problem for Carolina not the AAV...come on you are better than this,,

Didnt know 21 million in signing bonuses is cheap

C'mon guys, no need for that sort of stuff.
