I don’t understand why the Habs wouldn’t offer more. It must’ve been known the Canes already offered Aho a deal in the same ballpark, so why do this? If he signs, the Canes literally get what they want and sign Aho for cheap |

As a hockey fan i love it. Now someone do Marner - Up2nuthun
I'd love it if someone did and it was a similar cap hit/price. That's less than he was supposedly asking for, so if he signed it, Dubas would match it in a second and laugh. |

Aho signed the offer sheet now up to CAR to match it, seems CAR was offering Aho less than 8.5m per.. - Athrin
You have to check the salary structure as well. Aho’s contract had over 21mil in bonuses in the first year hahaha. Carolina hasn’t made that much money last year haha |

So all of you are saying it is an easy instant match by Carolina, makes me wonder what is driving the offer sheet.....what else is going on. Did Bergevin 'help' Carolina by setting the price ? |

If it's 8,454,872 or higher, it is two 1sts, 2nd and 3rd.
If it's 8,454,871 or less its one 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. |

He's not worth more. Canes don't get what they want because they're going to have to pay him way more than they're comfortable with up front.

And there’s the kicker, Melnyk 2.0 is gonna be pissed but they will still match |

So they will essentially have to pay him $20mil+ over the course of a year. |

One has to wonder why Aho would sign an offer sheet for what seems less AAV than the canes offer. Must of been maybe the upfront bonus money. |

If Carolina matches, they can't trade him for one year. If Carolina doesn't match, Montreal can't trade him for one year. So he's going to be either a Cane or a Hab for at least the next 12 months.

Exactly, I’m sure the canes would have wanted a 7-8 year deal and now that’s gone. Huge screw you move by Aho and the Canadians, love it lol |

Carolina has a week to respond. Contract is front loaded at 21-22 million first 2 years, base yearly salary is only 700,000-750,000.

If Carolina offered him more money he wouldn't have signed this offer sheet. If the Habs offered even $5,000 more per year they would have to include an extra first as compensation. They went to the very upper limit of the 1/2/3 compensation and put Carolina in a tough spot by offering so much up front |

Marner worth at least 10.59/yr now - kaptaan
Maybe.. but I see Marner and Aho as relatively comparable. One is an elite Center in the making the other an elite winger in the making. This tells me that Leafs were completely justified in proposing $8-10M. I think Marner and Leafs look at this and settle on $9.5-$10M aav for 5yrs
