Just the look on his face when he saw the contract he was offered.

Hell, Caps just signed Panik for $2.75M. Does GMJR even look at comparables or does he just pull numbers out of his @$$?????????

It’s just so (frank)ing dumb to hear Rutherford vacillate back and forth between “youth and speed” and “push back”. (frank)ing pick one l, dude. Going with Tanev after he seemingly picked youth and speed makes it obvious he still has no (frank)ing clue what he wants or what he’s doing.

I don’t dislike Rutherford. He gave me a lot of good hockey memories between 2015 and 2017, but I am over him as the general manager of the penguins. Thanks for the Cups, old man, but please leave.

I don't like the signing, but at 27 Tanev is a young UFA and he is fast. So he fits both that and grit. It was just an unnecessary waste of cap space.

I wouldn't have minded Alex Chiasson at 2.1 million. I like the Tanev signing. He has 5 SHG in 2 years and I believe he will do well on our pk. The money is a little much, but we did pay Hagelin 4 million a year previously. I know JR isnt done. I wonder if he trades Horny due to his age and cap hit.

They should have locked Jim in the Hockey Hall of Fame and took his phone away from him.

The Pens are officially worse while everyone around us is getting better.

Kessel replaced by Galch = downgrade

Tanev overpaid by about $1.5M = bad spending for a decent 4th liner.

Yeah Tanev is fast and extremely hard working and I like that the Pens have him and don't really care about the term because of the shorter window ....but the price is insane for the production he usually brings.

Meh, if they moved out Rust for say a 2nd, or a guy like Pulj, wouldn't it just be good asset management?

I am not ready to burn down Rutherford or the entire Penguins season because of this deal.

I think one of the things most sorely needed last season were players who would run through a wall/do anything to win. Yes, call that an intangible if you will, but that spark is something the Pens need. Its the same kind of concept that worked when the WBS kids came up. It's one of the reasons the Neal/Hornqvist trade completey changed the Penguins.

Contract aside - I like the player

Contract factored in - less than great. but GMJR will continue to tinker with the roster, no doubt. I think its more than plausible there were plans to trade another forward anyway.

If this results in a favorable Hornqvist/Rust deal or unloading JJ....I call this offseason a win.

I'm not the biggest Gardiner proponent but poop, why couldn't they just not sign tanev, trade rust for a pick and overpay him. At least he fits a position of need.

Nyquist signs for what I projected. Only $2M more than Tanev and the Pens will likely be shipping out someone to make room when he could have shipped out a player to make $6Mish in free space for an impact player.

Holy poop bud. You have been riding the short bus for a while now? Good asset management?

Deleting your account would be good asset management.

Cant quote, too lazy to fix...

But stop defending this trade by saying if it results in a JJ or Horny trade it's a win. It's not a win and can't be a win. Its 1.5 mil too much a year for what he is worth at max.

Pens fans think they could just sign anyone for what they signed for elsewhere

Ever noticed that top UFA's NEVER sign here - Like NEVER?

and this isn't a GMJR thing, I'm talking over the last 25 years??

We never seem to get a *star* and we also never seem to get those guys who take way less money for the privilege of playing here, or league minimum vets just looking for a cup....

Why is that, I honestly don't know

Last big UFA was who? Gonchar?

Pay a worse player the same as Rust, so that you can move Rust for something uncertain is the opposite of good asset management. That is really bad asset management.
