Since we don’t actually know Hall will resign I’d try for someone really established and productive.

Also, Boyle is pretty done. No need to sign him.

LET ME BREAK IT DOWN:

All using Cap Friendly & Spotrac

We're basically at 15 contracts & $54. Add Ty, Boqvist, Hughes = $56.75 @18 contracts. I don't see Hayden as an NHL player so take him out & we're at 17 contracts $56. This is where Ray is gonna earn his paycheck. We've got Zacha, Butcher, Mueller, Carrick to sign. We'll use the writers $7 and add in Carrick to that. That's now 21 contracts at $63. We'll stop right there. If we're going to add free agents we'll need 1 or 2 spots for them. If we don't add anyone else & just go with Anderson & Bastian (Rooney is included in the 15) we'd be at 23 contracts $64.5.

Now we go to next yr. Assuming Sami & Greene come off that's $10. We'll use the 21 contracts at $63 so it shows how much more we can spend for 2019. So Sami & Greene's $10 off puts us at $53. Hall from $6 to $11.5 is a $5.5 raise. Nico projects@$7.5. $6.5 raise. Bratt @$3.5 & Blackwood @$3.5 is $5.5 raise. That takes us from $53 to $70.5. Rooney would come off so we're basically at $70 @ 18 contracts. This is also using all minimums. Bratt & Bwood are the wild cards here. With a 50+ pt season from Bratt he gets more than $3.5. if Bwood takes the starting job & has a great playoff run he could go way up. If Shero duplicates Seversons offer of long term @$4 for Butcher we just went up $2.5. So let's say minimum 18 contracts @$70 & maximum 18 contracts @$75. Adding a $5 contract this yr leaves us at $75-$80 with 19 contracts next yr. If we're at $80 and our D consists of PK, Sevs, Butch, Ty, Mueller, Carrick. We already need to add to that or take a big step back. If Ty is struggling we're in a lot of trouble & limited Cap space. Now if we were to sign Gardiner or a solid Dman I'm totally good with a big signing because it goes to what we'll need next yr.

What Zacha, Butcher, Mueller, & Carrick get this yr is gonna be huge!!!

If we have a great 19-20 that more than likely will push up what we'll pay for Nico, Bratt, Blackwood, & Rooney.

I'd be comfortable spending another $5. More comfortable if it was on D. The more we spend this yr the more we're handcuffed on spending next season. We're already gonna have a ton of new faces with PK, Hughes, Ty, Boqvist. I'd much rather see where this team is at & spend during the season, at the deadline, in trades, etc then spend to what puts us at the Cap next yr & not be able to make any significant moves.

If we are going out and signing 4th liners I'd rather take another chance on Boyle, we could do worse than a 20 point center who was fairly effective on our PP and won't be a headache like it seems Nichushkin will be. My bet is that if an NHL team signs Nichushkin he bolts to the KHL as soon as he doesn't like his ice time/contract.

How is Boyle done? He’s 34 and has averaged 13 goals a year for the last 5 years playing 4th line minutes he’s the perfect 4th Line center who can be a net front presence on the PP

Todd did a piece on how Boyle wasn't driving play and was pretty bad 5 v 5. He's just slow and getting old. Yes, he can score a few garbage goals on the PP but that's what your getting. He can't fight for poop and unless it's hockey fights cancer night you aren't going to notice him.... except maybe trying to hustle his ass back into the play that just went blowing past him. OLD+SLOW=NO.

There are supposedly several teams interested in him so he's not likely to be back anyway. And if you don't like my opinion you can take comfort in the fact Ray Ray doesn't ask me to approve signings anyway. But for what you'd be getting anyway you may as well sign Kevin Rooney, pocket the savings and enjoy watching someone 8 years younger get up and down the ice.
