Well said. Do you think we look for any more defense in the UFA or trade markets?

I agree. We are in the process of building a strong defense and may finally have achieved it, so why would we trade a key cog? Same for Vats. Keep them both.

Additionally a strong defense can overcome spotty goaltending......which unfortunately we may have.

Shero will either extend Vats or trade him. I'd like to see him stay if his play rebounds from last year's injury filled disaster. Andy Greene is pretty done and even if we sign all our RFAs (Mueller, Carrick and Butcher) we don't have a lot of Defenseman in the organization. This is probably why we drafted so many defenders because the pipeline needs to be refilled.

I never understood why this coaching staff was so hard on Severson or why anyone would look to trade him. Seems stupid unless the return was amazing. Meaning I wouldn't be shopping this guy ever.

I think adding Subban gets us to a respectable level of D and hopefully Nesreddine's system isn't as poopty as it's looked. Would love to see Scott Stevens coaching these guys.

He also looked good with team Canada after the season with an increased roll. I know international play doesn't translate or mean anything once the season starts but given an honest shot with meaningful offensive minutes he can contribute point wise from the back end.

Also I thought Carrick filled in very nicely for a 5-6 pair defender once we acquired him. I unfortunately haven't been able to watch too many games, as most if radio/highlights/box score (there's always something on the go unfortunately.) Those who did the eye test on him what was the knock about being on the bottom pairing and why wouldn't you want him back ?

I liked Carrick's game also. Assuming we sign Butcher and Mueller as RFAs along with Subban, Greene, Vats and Severson we'll have 6 NHL defenders. Carrick is a good #7 and we'll hopefully have Ty Smith pushing for a spot.

I joke that we traded Ben Lovejoy for a better defenseman when we got Carrick and a third round pick from Dallas. Carrick is also 10 years younger then Lovejoy (25 vs. 35). The pick ended up being (F) Graeme Clarke 80th overall from the Ottawa 67s. Info below on Clarke.

Panarin visiting NYR. Let's hope he doesn't sign there or if he does, it's for way too much money.

Severson and his contract are absolute keepers! Smith may have to start on LD, which shouldn't be a big adjustment for a Lefty. I am guessing Walsh does one more season with Harvard, then he will still likely play a year in Bing to see what he can really do.

Vats, our former top D, and still a very good top 4 D, is our most disposable asset. He should also fetch a very nice return, whether it is done now, or at the deadline. If LJ landed us a 3rd and Carrick, maybe Greene can fetch something decent as well.

As always lets get a couple RW's Ray! Your choice (Donskoi, Kapanen, Zuccerello, Connolly, Simmonds, Perry, Pavelski.......)

ABSOLUTELY LJ made us better!!!! He shares the accomplishment with KK. Without those two solely controlling our games, we would never of had such great lottery odds.

Could this be the year we see Brandon Baddock ??? He has been qualified and can throw hay makers but I dont think we have ever gave him a call up or look yet he gets kept around.

I double down on this message.

and now we continue to wait. 3 more days. Give us the goods, Ray. Top 6 winger. Make it happen and I think we may be a playoff team again, especially if we keep Vats (confidently our 2nd best dman).

I think Panarin is the type of player you gladly overpay for.

Seeing Brandon Baddock in your lineup is like seeing Blake Pietila.

It means poop's gone bad.

What is an overpayment for the breadman? I mean, 320 points in 322 games, fresh off his strongest ppg season, and a healthy career with just 6 games missed, the guy is certainly worth big $$$. If we could get a stab at him, 5 years, 9.5M AAV, I would be happy.

I think I saw something that hall said contract talks haven't started and that he wants to see if the devils make the finals and that he knows he doesn't have many more chances so he is keeping options open

That's not what he said at all. Honestly nothing he's said has been any different than his breakup day interview and things we already knew. He talked about how excited he was adding Subban and Hughes to the team. He said that he really wants/hopes we get into the playoffs this season, and that he wants to be apart of a playoff and stanley cup contender to make up for lost times(aka being in the league 9 years and only playing 1 playoff series). There was also a clickbait tweet from Luke Fox where he said Hall said the Devils "have to make the playoffs in 2020" which isnt a part of the interview so who knows if its true, then a subsequent tweet saying there have been no contract talks with Ray, and neither side is in a rush. Which we already knew, nothing new to talk about

Even though its nothing new heres the video for all interested: https://www.tsn.ca/video/...hughes-in-the-mix~1716958

i don't remember what the compensation was.. 4 1st round picks? That's a mighty lot. But if we're picking in the 20s for the next 4 years.. plus he's so young. The problem with him, or a Panarin.. or anyone we're adding that will cost 8-10mil for 6+ years.. is we'll already have Hall and potentially/hopefully Hughes, Hischier, and Blackwood and maybe even a dman to be giving big-time contracts to. Annnd.. you can only afford so many 8-12mil players. It just becomes a simple cap issue for the longterm. Not considering PK right now because Hischier and Hughes shouldn't command 8+ during the time PK is on the books for 9, so that's a wash.
but long-term...
Hall 11mil?
Hughes 10mil?
Hischier 10mil?
Blackwood 8mil?
Smith/whoever 7mil?

That's half the cap in 4 players, not including another 10mil winger in Marner/Panarin. So idk if it would be best to add a top-dollar guy to a long-term plan. Makes me think shorter term 4-6mil wingers would make more sense.. like a Nyqvist, because it assures we'll have the cap space to fit Hall, Hughes, Hischier, Blackwood 5+ years from now. Gets a little tight when you throw in another top-dollar guy.

But.. I could be wrong.

In the future..

Hall-Hughes-Marner
Bratt-Hischier-Palmieri
Boqvist-Zacha-Coleman

would be a VERY healthy top 9 to work with.. providing everyone develops to at least 75% of what we dream their ceilings are. It's just a LOT of top dollars wrapped up in 4 forwards, and that typically isn't a thing in this league.
