Im trying to think of a team that has to dump money or if anyone on devils is traded and we keep most of that salary. I can only think #6 and #19. - Leniwm1
Seabrook is just impossible because he is a 7th defenseman making first pairing money for the next five seasons. He is just actually garbage. |

Zajac signed his 5.75 per year in 2013
Hall signed his 6 per year in 2012
One player got lucky
The other got robbed.
Crazy how depending on the team you are on can mean a huge difference in your contract. |

The biggest thing is that in the past few years the cap has risen way faster than it years previous. It makes it seem like the contracts from a few years ago are really "cheap" in comparison when they were percentage wise the same as the big deals now. Also because of the cap increases you're going to see certain players sign shorter contracts so they don't get stuck with an 8 year deal that isn't going to pay their market value half way through. This is the thing with Marner who wants the money but doesn't want the term. |

Both were very big money in 2012. Lou Lams overpaid (and had too much term) because he was panicked about people leaving the team. To NJ Travis was very valuable as there wasn't really any prospect for another 1C.
Hall was a kid and was a restricted free agent. So the fact he got more money in that position shows how valuable his team already knew he was.
The circumstances were very different even if in the end the money looks similar. |

Thats exactly what I mean. Different situations with players on opposite ends of the skilled spectrum and identical cash.
Its just interesting thats all. Not blaming Lou or anything. |

He's really not that good making 4.55mil with 3 years left and the canes had to attach Saarela, who had a great season in Rockford and should be ready to crack an NHL line-up, to the deal to move his contract. |

His career possession numbers are good, he's more of a defensive Dman and the isles used him that way. The only thing that was weird about De Haan last year was the amount of O zone starts Carolina gave him. No idea why they sold on him. He's a solid stay at home dman who chews up 19-20 minutes a night.
58.4 CF% in the playoffs last year, which was +7.2 relative to his team.
I'd take De Haan, not sure what the problem was with him in Carolina. 4.5 for a mid pairing defender in his 20's is ok by me. |

With almost $25.8M in available salary cap space, the Devils aren't done adding to their roster. They had a couple deals on the table leaving Vancouver this weekend, as team pres Hugh Weber told us Sat, and are willing to eat salary, if they're enticed to do so.
I wonder what else Ray has up his sleeve - vlongo4419

Yes. He doesn't have real sources and just infers then makes statements of fact. |

He's also pretty accurate and more reliable than most people that arent the TSN guys. He had a click baity title to an article and thats it, the actual article said nothing we didnt already know if you actually read it. |

The Devils are going to field a better line-up and they'll finally have some depth, especially up the middle. Still a little worried about the D and goaltending but I'm definitely more positive than last year.

Do you even know how buyouts work? - Pomegrant
Buyouts are a great option, but certainly not Seabrook. We want low term contracts. Marlaue would have been ideal, as it fetched a 1st and we could have fit him on the 3rd line, or somehow worked Kapanen into the mix. Other guys like Callahan, Horton, Ericcson would be great options if a 1st or 2nd rd pick could be gained. We are in a great position to take on a bad contract with 2 years max. |

Where do you think that puts Nico? His numbers certainly has not been as great as his play. I see a future Bergeron when I watch nico. His extension will likely be a mix of that he has done, plus his potential. I am guessing something in the neighborhood of 8 years @ 7M AAV |

I’d love that contract from a fans point of view, but if 7 mil a year is the offer, I think the agent will want the term to be 4 years or less. Gives Nico a shot at a huge payday rather than letting the Devils eat up UFA years for 7 mil. But hey if he signs 8 years for 7 I think we should all be ecstatic. |

That is the going rate for Centers that aren't exactly elite. It's not terrible. |
