Ben Shelley: Analyzing the Eberle contract

Good write up Ben. It’s a win for Lou and the team, and it’s good to know Eberle wanted to stay. Both sides benefit from the deal. Now Lou has several other items he needs to address. I really think he should resign Lehner. I’m thinking the same contact as Eberle 5 x 5.5. Also, I think Lou should be preemptive and get Barzal, Pulock, and Toews signed to extensions after July 1 before their price tags keep going up and up.

He’s great with Barzal. This is a good deal. I would love an explanation from Islanders management on why Brock Nelson got more years and more money with a much less significant body of work. Sure Nelson had a better year last year but Ebs is a far more accomplished player

Agree with all of this. I think Lehner would come in around a very similar AAV and term and dealing with the RFAs a year early would be ideal. From the RFAs perspectives though, it's probably worthwhile to hold off on negotiating and bet on themselves next year.

Eberle has definitely been a more productive player historically but production in a contract year always heavily impacts a deal. Also centers in general come with a premium and if Nelson walked, there's a big problem down the middle.
