Yes. Chief is related to his heritage. He doesn't mind the nickname at all. Nor did Bobby Taylor. Other guys don't like it, especially nowadays.

kk wasnt sure cause i play men’s league and a guy there is nick named chief but he is white so didnt know it was just a hockey thing, thanks too

Ek has some legit sources. I know because he connected me with a couple of them. Rumors are a niche, yes. But HB is more than rumors. It's a collection of writers who are all over the map in terms of experience, professional credentials, degrees of objectivity and degrees of writing skill. The only commonality is a love of the game.
- bmeltzer

and that's how I have always taken this site. The love of hockey... as there's no other reason to visit unless you share that commonality .....I enjoy the rumors aspect but enjoy the write ups even more. You guys do good work...some more then others, but I really like all the different characters on here. Keep up the good work.

The suspension had everything to do with race. However, Berube apologized, explained that he didn't mean it in a racial manner, and Worrell accepted the apology and forgave him. But since they were taken a certain way by Worrell, he was suspended for a game.

For example, if my kids are jumping around on playground equipment and I call them monkeys, it's clearly because of what they're doing, not because of their skin color. But if there are black kids there (sorry PC crowd) with them, I know I may not be able to say the same thing because it could be misconstrued as racist. So yeah, even though Berube didn't mean it that way, he should have realized it could be taken that way, which is why he was suspended.

- jmatchett383

Pretty much the same scenario that cost Howard Cosell his career.

I'll buy Berube isn't racist, just a ridiculous amount of poor judgement, and lack of awareness.

Might take an overpayment by the Flyers to get this deal done with Hayes. Seravalli says the Flyers aren’t his first choice.

If he prefers AZ and Columbus then have at it.

The deal has to be right for the Flyers. If it isn't, then they took their chance. Still other options out there and other avenues to explore.

Also saying Flyers aren't first choice could be a negotiating tool too

Giving up draft picks and overpaying for players like Kevin Hayes is bad business.
July 1 should be a real hoot.

Agent speak although I don’t think he signs here because some other team will overpay.

What's overpay?

Every team knows about the ball park Hayes will command. If some teams comes in and offers 7 years at 7.5 per then so be it. I think almost every team will be about the 6 for 36 like Nelson. That's why i think he ends up a little more like 6 at 6.25 possibly 6.5

Isn't the idea of giving up the draft pick to get a deal done before July 1? If he signs elsewhere what was the purpose of giving up the draft pick?

A 7 year deal for 7.25 per would be worth it just for pure entertainment value. Plus NMC

No the draft pick was to get a head start and be at the forefront before teams start talking June 23.

The pick was to get in the door early and present before other teams do.

You wait this long to get to FA, have one shot to make it right, to get everything you want, and you're going to settle for a team not #1 on your list?

Maybe a negotiating tactic. Doubt it though. Not something I'd let leak out as a tactic.

Why either your saying AZ and Columbus pay up to come get me or letting Philly know it will take some money to keep you from talking to teams.

It's a negotiating tactic

Benn and Klingberg were 5th rounders. How would you like those players on the Flyers?

Doesn't matter. The point was there are players to be found in the late rounds.

The statistical odds of a 5th round pick ever playing a single game in the NHL are less than 10 percent. The odds of the player becoming an NHL regular are a fraction of that, and the odds of him becoming an impact player are statistically less than 1 percent.
