Blackhawks.com will take a look at five top prospects Chicago will likely be considering if consensus top picks Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko are off the board in Vancouver.

McCabe is fine. The injuries are creeping in a little bit, but he's a pretty solid 4 dman, probably a 5 on a contender. There's not a lot of flash or sizzle, except when he lays the occasional booming check. I think there might be a little more offense available in his game.

Botterill needs to bring in more offense, perhaps by trading Risto - something like Risto, Nylander, maybe another piece for Callahan, Gourde, Cirelli. I am also in the minority of Sabres fans who thinks we should trade 7OA - my target would be Trouba. Dahlin-Trouba, McCabe-Montour would be a good top-4 imo.

McCabe is an injury waiting to happen. Hard pass.

Maybe work a trade with Columbus where the Hawks get Murray and Wennberg and we send them Anisimov, Mitchell and a 4th or Anisimov and our 2nd and 5th. I think Saad and Wennberg played pretty well together a couple years ago and a Saad-Wennberg-Kubalik 3rd line coud be a solid 3rd line with good speed.

I haven´t seen McD at the draft meetings (On The Clock series) or maybe he is behind the curtains? He didn´t even know who Boqvist was when Hawks drafted him. He even asked Kelley is he good..I hate message board narratives. A lot of people jump into them without question..
- MjulQvist

You new here?

The truth is McD is a part of the reason why the Hawks have because one of the most successfully run organizations over the last ten years. The guy is the President and CEO. Of course he wants to know what's going on.

Yeah, but Mark Kelly wouldn't be the head scout if he does all his work, and then McD "nixes" it.

He would up and leave to another organization very quickly.

I've seen Mitchell play about 5-6 games over the past couple season and he seems "OK" but I haven't seen anything to make me think he isn't in 4th position of the 4-horsemen, in my estimation. I'm not trying to run him out of town but if we need to use one of the 4-horsemen in a trade - it's Mitchell all day.

Are you sure about that?
I'm hoping that they select Byram he has legit elite talent. Defence wins Championships. Unless New York is dumb enough to pass on Kakko which I doubt will happen. Regardless my friend I'm happy with whoever we get with the 3rd selection considering we were slated to pick at #12. As long as it's not Caulfield it's a win for me.

- BGKarras

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rangers take Byram. Personally I don’t think Kakko impressed during the worlds. In fact he sort of disappeared off the score sheet after the first game.

You have the wonder if Philly's Fletcher has his eye on Trouba with that announcement he is willing to trade out of slot#11 for a young NHLer.

Maybe the Krebs injuring will move him down and maybe out of the first round, but that sounds crazy that everyone passes (maybe twice) on this guy. It is a partial, not a Wiz total or Rocket Richard type achilles that takes the ability to derive power in you able to propel.

Cole Caufield

NHL player comparable: Alex Ovechkin

The breakdown: “He’s a miniature version of Ovi. He’ll score every single way but they both have that campout spot on the back side. If you leave them alone any other spot, they’re equally as dangerous. They’ll both score back door. The difference is 120 pounds or something. But you’ve got a mini-Ovechkin. The similarity is how the puck explodes off their stick. Once you get Cole into the dots and hash marks, they’re similar.”

VGK trades Brayden McNabb and Cody Eakin to CHI for Carl Dahlstrom, Nicolas Beaudin and rights to Dylan Sikura – I have to do the McNabb/Eakin trade, right? It's been discussed at length on the message boards around here and I've brought up Eakin many times. The Hawks get McNabb, a top 4 D on a slick $2.5M AAV for the next 3 years and Eakin, who can plug into their 3rd line, take key draws and chip in with 15-20 goals. The Hawks give up a lot in youth, but with Vegas putting themselves in cap hell, they will need younger, cheaper players. Assuming Sikura signs for approximately $1M per year, Vegas will be saving a $4.5M. According to Mirtle, they'll need every penny they can get back as he predicts them being $2.6M over the cap after their signings.

I’d swap Joki for Beaudin.

The only problem is the team trading for him could get nothing I feel he were to return for his senior year and go free agent.

He plays a quiet game for DU. He is the most developed two ways of the 4 of them rn. Plays in all situations. He has only scratched the surface.

Haven't seen that comparison. See him compared as far of style of play to Toews , Bergeron and Kopitar.

I'm probably the "out of step Charlie" on Mitchell because others sure laud him more than what I've seen from him would warrant.

I think it's a legit possibility that NYR surprises everyone and takes Bowen Byram at #2 . Every year, teams surprise because they know something we don't and they scout harder than the internetz speculate...
- Slofire94

Not saying you're right on this possibility but hell yea expect surprises in he draft. Nothing is certain with prospects other than McDavid's and Crosby's so organIzations trust their scouts and that has nothing to do with any prognosticator any of us reads.......... As great as Kakko is he's a winger.

When it comes to franchise centers or #1 Dmen franchises will do most anything to acquire them. That's why I think Detroilet who is barren on the blueline will move heaven and earth if they feel Byram is that franchise Dman.

Again, the Hockey Gods blessed the Hawks with the #3 overall and if that wasn't enough the consensus top Dman ran wild thru the WHL playoffs. If the Hawks do not have Byram ranked as a franchise Dman the Hawks hit the lottery twice if they're looking to leverage their pick.

My response was more in regards to Wiz actually putting BB third overall. Not to speak for Wiz, but to me it appears that he's place the likes of Turcotte and others ahead of BB (but not CC for some reason).

We're all entitled to our own opinions, unless you think the Hawks shouldn't draft Cole Caufield, then you're just wrong.

As a Hawks fan living in Vancouver (and Toronto before that), I am accustomed to going against the grain.

Great article by Lazerus regarding Goodman’s role in the draft:

https://theathletic.com/1...k=https://t.co/NL2OgxzLcy

- walleyeb1

Haven't read past your post, wonder how you feel about this article?........... I'd imagine I'm in the minority but is a Goodman gonna change the arm angle on a pitcher, move a batters hands down/up/back, rework a QB's footwork, change a Podkolzin's stride?

What do you think Greg "The Bull" Luzinski's, Cecil Fielder's or John Kruk's vertical leap would tell a Goodman?

You know why Crow got little recognition until he won some cups? Cuz the guy stabbed at pucks, was off his angle constantly, pulled himself out of the crease to stab at pucks going 2 feet wide of the net, was often off balance. ....... Science and film says this guy ain't gonna be consistent until he shows you he is and subsequently was.

No, gimme 1 Charlie Lau or 1 Darryl Belfry over 100 Goodman's. Mechanics being changed or modified will make a 20 home run guy a 30 home run guy, a 10 game winner into a 20 game winner, a 20 goal scorer into a 30 goal scorer not whether or not an 18 yr old ends up 6ft 3in or 6ft 1in.

Sure gimme a Goodman to construct a diet work out regime for my athletes but keep him away from any draft decisions.

I have a fantasy and it goes like this:

Blackhawks trades A.Boqvist, P.Kurashev and 1st round pick 2020 to New Jersey for their number one pick. Boqvist can reunite with his brother.

Then..draft Jack Hughes number one (I would rather take Kakko but because Hughes is center I would do this) and Bowen Byram at #3.

I´m a dreamer.. but I´m not the only one?

- MjulQvist

Maybe not this scenario but a move down could get em a Zegras/Dach/Cozens and a Newhook/Knight/Broberg.

I think there are probably a couple home runs in the 2nd rd. Hawks need to hit on a Hjalmarsson or 2 in the 3-4th rds.
