Peter Tessier: Should the Skinner deal make Jets fans nervous? Looking at Skinner's deal, the Jets RFA forwards and what happens next? Is there a strategy for Chevy with all the other RFA talent needing deals too?

The strategy should be trade a winger. The Jets are going to have 30+ million tied up in their top 4 wingers.

Skinner's contract is nuts. Everyone should recognize that so I don't think it will have much impact. 442 pts in 661 gp ?? That's 0.66 ppg for those of you scoring at home. Just because there's something wrong with the water in Buffalo it doesn't mean the rest of the league is infected. I hope

Skinner took a massive discount, dude!
I mean, he had over 3x the amount of pts as Milan Lucic, and Melanie is getting 6m a year,

I;m confused why Skinner matters? He was UFA.
Horrible contract, but it won't change anything.

Rantanen’s next deal will be $10+
Aho’s next deal will be $10+

The league has a spending issue again and they will have to have another correction. Doesn’t matter if you call it a strike or a lock-out , both sides will spend and ask again until it falls apart.

NOt sure the NHL can expect the PA to give in again. They agreed to a hard cap.

Its not a league issue. Players earn X amount of the hockey revenues, that number does not change. Its the distribution of the players share that so far is divided at the discretion of the GM's. The players may want to have more control over how their share of the revenue is divided. RFA's were supposed to keep salaries & 2nd contracts after the ELC's in check but the last few years, these young guns want more $$$ of the pie for potential rather than waiting until they are UFA's. The victims that are going to get squeezed will be the older UFA's. Its an internal players problem.

Believe you're right - it's actually a NHLPA problem - it's the 2nd - 4th liners who are being squeezed out. The owners don't have a problem - pay the stars huge $$$ - and minimum wage to the rest. If I was a veteran 2nd-4th liner, I would want constrainsts put on.
The stars get the points, but the others do the dirty work to succeed. If I was the latter (who are in the majority) I would make a motion to lower the maximum $$$ per year for a player, including bonuses. Spread it around, there's lot out there!

That contract better not set any precedent, as Connor>Skinner. Yikes, I was hoping Connor could be inked similar to Ehlers, maybe 6.5M AAV.

Laine better go to a 1-2 year arbitration deal, as he is way to risky to commit too at this time.

That Skinner contract will be the most regrettable signing in 1-2 seasons from now.

He doesn't know, he writes the same dribble over and over on every board...
It amazes me how concerned people are about player contracts, owners have made a killing for decades, players get some of the pie and all the dudes standing 5'6 and under gotta make their opinions known...

Skinner actually makes $30M over the first three years of the deal, not $37.5M. Total salary for the first 6 years is $10M per and then $7M and then the last year is $5M.

A few things I’m jumping in here for:
1: Trouba for Ghostbear + 11th overall is a massive steal. Ghost is only slightly below Trouba, as far as ability goes. He’s also better for offence, which we desperately need.
2: Skinner dunks on Connor across the board. If Connor wants any cap hit beginning with or over 7, trade him.
It goes like this:
Shooting talent: Laine>Skinner>Connor
Play driving: Skinner>Laine>Connor
Rate of production: Laine>Skinner>Connor

At the end of year 3 he gets a 7.5M signing bonus. That’s the lockout protection.

Sure it won't, the market dictates the money, Stone got 9.5, he set the market. But I guess because it's Buffalo, it's a bad deal. If we sign him it's bad, if we lost him on top of trading ROR for nothing, you get people like you posting of how bad Buffalo is. Either way, it's just another thing for people on hockeybuzz to female dog about regarding the Sabres.

I get a lot of poop whenever I say it, but it's coming. I didn't think it would be this upcoming CBA, but the next for sure. There's always the outliers, but with how many huge contracts are coming down in a short period, it might be sooner than we think.

Be careful on this board, I once called Laine "Patricia", and it ruffled a few feathers.

Again, its not a lockout scenario issue between league & players association. It may get addressed this next CBA but the players may request an internal cap of what RFA's get in order to ensure there is enough money to be dispersed to the remaining players. When you start paying 9.0-10-11.0+ million per year on long term deals like Buffalo did with Skinner, they have to be considered one of the few Franchise players, teams can afford to have. If a GM feels that player is in that category, they'll pay the money & grind the remaining 80% of the players trying to get a reasonable payday.

I never thought of Skinner as in that pay grade category but hey, Buffalo does. Everyone gets excited about the new shiny drafted toys & if they have any kind of success, these 22-23 year olds are wanting the type of $$$ like what top UFA's are wanting to command who after being in the league for 8 or 9 years, they feel they have earned that big contract. This is going to create a rift within the players union when teams just dont have the $$$ to pay every shiny new toy 9.0-10-11 million. You cant blame the GMs for succumbing to their star players salary demands.

I think Star players will just tell the rest of the mid levels players that if they want to get paid, then just get rid of the cap and especially escrow. I do not see a rift happening within the players union. To the point of players getting paid 10 million, the same argument can be made towards the owners. Their profit margins are rarely disclosed and they seem to make the same argument as other industries that say the only way they can survive is through cutbacks and cost cutting.
