seems like it makes things a whole lot worse for the Pens. Unless Trocheck is included in that deal (then no pick), I don't see why you'd do it. Can't see Florida doing this though.

IF Laine wants out of Winnipeg then I'd try to swing something in that direction.

Or just keep him...not exactly a bad problem to have...

Evgeni Malkin rumor

I understand the stance being taken in writing this, but I don't see why Florida would do that deal. Huberdeau and Barkov obviously have chemistry and are a top pairing, Huberdeau is younger (obviously) and under contract on a good AAV.

I'm not debating Malkin's resume nor the "generational talent" comment, but it is fair to debate whether or not that is fading. He's defense has never even been average, and coming of a PIM-riddled year, I don't see his value as this high. I think it'd be different if Florida was truly "one player away" but that's not the case.

We're all guilty of it, but I think the PIT fan base is overvaluing the potential return of a Malkin deal.

This sounds like a great deal... for Florida.

Tippet and another prospect better be coming back if this actually happened

This doesn’t seem legitimate. Rutherford is stupid, but he’s not that stupid.

You know Huberdeau had 92 points last year, right? And is 6 years younger? And almost 4 mil cheaper? And still has 4 years remaining on his contract?

IF.....They made this trade and sent JJ with Malkin..The return is Hubdreau + 1st and they can sign Duchene....Thats a good move for Pens.

Malkin had an off year and put up 72 points. Florida would be getting a generational talent as their center. I don't think you understand the impact that would have vs. Huberdeau.

This write up doesn't mention another scenario. One where they do trade Malkin and use a Kessel trade to net a 2C. That frees up money, potentially gets Sid a winger and (somewhat) fills a void if Malkin is dealt.

He's 33...few players continue to peak in their mid-30s. Projections show a continued decline is expected. He's also played 70 or more games TWICE in the last 10 years.

So why would Florida take on more money, on an older player, who plays a position they are not thin at? Oh, and also include a 1st rounder.

Nah. Most PIT fans realize that the Pens will not get better by trading Geno. And most realize it’s smarter to keep Geno then expect a return that will improve the team.

this is the smart take I think.

given Geno's age, contract, fact that he is likely on the decline of his career, etc, etc....the pens can't expect to trade him and get a return that helps now.

if they're still in a "win now" phase....then trading him is stupid because nobody will trade top current assets for him.

if they move him, it will be for a deal similar to what Ottawa got for Karlsson.....that being, a couple of "okay" roster players to make the cap work, and a lot of future assets.

if they move Malkin it's because they've decided their window is closed and they're starting a rebuild.....which might not be the worst idea

If their window is closed, then so be it. Unless Geno asks to be traded, he should be retiring a penguin. He’s done just as much for this franchise as Sid. It’d be disrespectful just to trade him to kickstart a rebuild. He helped us win 3 cups. Dude deserves his numbers in the rafters and to be a life time Penguin. (UNLESS he requests it.)

Again, it ain't happening. These rumors are ridiculous. Christ, should I start asking my 5 year old for Malkin rumors? I think he'd be better at this than what I'm reading lately.

With Kessel most likely leaving does Geno think the window is closed? That might be his take on this and, if so, might encourage him to request a trade. Sure hope he stays. Loved Geno the Machino but worry he doesn’t have much left in the tank.

Disagree...Its a business. If moving Malkin makes the team better then so be it. Keeping a player around because he helped you win in the past makes no sense to me. He deserves nothing more than his $9.5mil contract. Its no different than any other job.

Ray Bourque retired a Bruin
Peyton Manning a Colt
Jordan Bulls

Malkin can retire a Pen if he wants.

All in a perfect world / scenario. You're forgetting Kessel's short list of teams able to trade for him. Also, Sid has a winger. See: Jake Guentzel. No Pens fan with a brain wants to trade Geno.
