Then you have Andre "Red Light" Racicot who has a Cup

piggybacked completely off of Patrick Roy in 1993, but still.

I could see Joe pulling a Mike Fisher, start the season late and get some extra rest in. However, he cannot sign with SJ, they are not winning a Cup.

He'll never be as as great as two-time Stanley Cup winner Craig Adams or 4-time Cup winners Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper.

It does suck for him, but he was SO LOYAL to the Sharks, he could have went elsewhere multiple times and wanted to win with that crew.

He is a great example for everyone to follow especially the youngsters in the nhl.

This doesnt tarnish his legacy at all.

Winning the Cup is a team effort. Thornton has still had an amazing career - just couldn't get over that hump. He also likely could have won a Cup with another team, but decided to stay loyal to SJ. Still hoping he decides to give it one more season - he was great as the 3C

There was that classic Joe summer in St Thomas where he beat up that cop. That could tarnish his legacy.

Says the keyboard jockey who hides behind anonymity & will never accomplish anything close to what Thornton has.

Im sure every man in the SJ locker room as well as the front office would disagree 150% with your “poor leader” remarks.

As for the “cuck” thing, sounds like you’re the resident expert on the subject...& please don’t drag us down into your personal hell...

What has he accomplished?

Being pretty okay at Hockey?

The standards some people have for their heroes. Some people must just like licking boots...

14th all time in career NHL scoring. Top 5 in NHL scoring 5 times, including once at age 23 and once at age 36. Top 10 in assists for 12 out of 13 consecutive seasons. One-time first-team all-star and three-time second-team all-star (at center, by far the most competitive position).

No he's not Gretzky or Lemieux, but anyone who is at least trying to be objective would have to concede that Thornton is easily a Hall of Famer, and in fact his resume is better than average even among players who are already there.

As for not being a "winner" -- give me a break. Hockey is a team game; not every great player gets a championship. And it seems to me that people throw out the "never won a Cup" argument extremely arbitrarily, only for players they happen to have a personal grudge against for one ridiculous reason or another.

Does anyone out there, for example, really believe that Ray Bourque would be any less Hall-worthy or any less of leader if he had stayed in Boston instead of going to Colorado to win his Cup? It's not like he didn't have chances in Boston either -- during Bourque's time there (1979-1999) the Bruins were third overall in regular season wins (behind Philadelphia and Montreal), third overall in playoff games played (behind Edmonton and Montreal), won two President's trophies and made two Stanley Cup finals.

You also have to consider that star players are distributed much more widely among a greater number of teams in today's NHL. It was a lot easier to win a Cup in a six team league, and it was a lot easier to accumulate all of the league's top stars in one spot during the pre-cap era.

If the NHL continues to be a 30+ team, hard salary cap league for the foreseeable future, it's going to become more and more common for HoF-caliber players to play 20+ seasons without winning.
