It does suck for him, but he was SO LOYAL to the Sharks, he could have went elsewhere multiple times and wanted to win with that crew.
He is a great example for everyone to follow especially the youngsters in the nhl.
This doesnt tarnish his legacy at all. |

Winning the Cup is a team effort. Thornton has still had an amazing career - just couldn't get over that hump. He also likely could have won a Cup with another team, but decided to stay loyal to SJ. Still hoping he decides to give it one more season - he was great as the 3C |

No he's not Gretzky or Lemieux, but anyone who is at least trying to be objective would have to concede that Thornton is easily a Hall of Famer, and in fact his resume is better than average even among players who are already there.
As for not being a "winner" -- give me a break. Hockey is a team game; not every great player gets a championship. And it seems to me that people throw out the "never won a Cup" argument extremely arbitrarily, only for players they happen to have a personal grudge against for one ridiculous reason or another.
Does anyone out there, for example, really believe that Ray Bourque would be any less Hall-worthy or any less of leader if he had stayed in Boston instead of going to Colorado to win his Cup? It's not like he didn't have chances in Boston either -- during Bourque's time there (1979-1999) the Bruins were third overall in regular season wins (behind Philadelphia and Montreal), third overall in playoff games played (behind Edmonton and Montreal), won two President's trophies and made two Stanley Cup finals.
You also have to consider that star players are distributed much more widely among a greater number of teams in today's NHL. It was a lot easier to win a Cup in a six team league, and it was a lot easier to accumulate all of the league's top stars in one spot during the pre-cap era.
If the NHL continues to be a 30+ team, hard salary cap league for the foreseeable future, it's going to become more and more common for HoF-caliber players to play 20+ seasons without winning.
