Tyler Cameron: Re-Draft Friday: 2012
Welcome back to re-draft Friday. Today we're looking at 2012.

If you're looking for some optimism this Friday, it might be best to look in the other direction.

The Blackhawks were coming off a tough loss in the first round to Mike Smith and the Phoenix Coyotes. How did that affect their draft?

First

The draft does seem kind of a buster. It would be nice to still have Turbo on the Hawks as his 200' game steadily improves, however, that ship sailed.

I thought that Yotes series was one of the biggest screw jobs of all time.

Shaw gets penalized for skating around Mike Smith who flopped around like an electrocuted fish. I think Hawks dropped that game. Glad Smith got blown away in the 1st round this year.

Rafi Torres leaves his feet and late hits Hossa. No penalty. Bollig takes him on and gets the 5 min instigator penalty. Torres was always a thug and this pretty much cemented his legacy.

Ever since that series I've always wished ill upon Coyotes.

That Shaw suspension was terrible. Smith with a nice acting job there.

It sucked because Shaw's emergence happened that year with 23 points in 37 regular season games and his presence was infectious at the start of that series. The Hawks definitely missed his energy.

Outside of Lindholm and Freddy... ANA didn't have a stellar draft either. However, as I mentioned, that was the case for a lot of teams!

You’re Right - My point being Murray didn’t botch the first couple, as many teams did as you pointed out nicely -

This is true.

Anaheim is usually solid at the draft. I tend to like a lot of their picks.

Who do you like at #9 this year for the Ducks?

Draftsite.com has Matthew Boldy in a mock draft. Thoughts?

I would be happy if this happened. But I think Stan goes and picks Byram Bowen I have a funny feeling he's trying to do what Nashville did build the team from the Defense out.

That would be a mistake. Cozens is the pick.

Watched the Czech v Latvia game yesterday. Thoughts on Kubalik (which is pronounced ku-ball-ick for those that care).

Played RW on the 4th line. Plays PK. Good wheels, seems to have good vision, knows where to go to get open and has good size. Has a good shot and gets it off fast and accurate. Not overly physical. I would think if he signs he would have a good shot to make the team as a bottom 6 forward, preferably 3rd line.

One other thing about the iihf tourney is some of the team's fans are awesome! The Czech fans stand and jump for a third of the game and just go nuts. The Great Britain team is bad but their fans wear costumes, cheer like crazy and when they score all turn around, lock arms and sing and just have a great time.

Well if they could package it with Ritchie ( cost controlled hammer, whose young and can play) for a D man - Because Jones and Comtois are making him expendable- that would be optimum- sans that -

I’ll take in order of availability-

D - Cam York
W- Caufield - cat clone -
C- Newhook
C- Zegras -

Kuablik will have the honour of having his own blog once this tournament is over.

I've been watching him closely.

I think he slides into the 3RW spot with Kahun possibly on his LW.

Depending on how Bowman, Kelley and the rest of the staff see him, it could allow them to spend more on a guy like Dzingel, Duchene, etc. if they see Kubalik as a top 9 player.

Besides Caufield, Bowen is the best option.

That draft blew! The good pieces we had, hopefully, brought us back better players. Only way I can look at that.

From last blog: HamiltonHawk & walleyeb1, you guys spoke about Rask being in the zone. I see a 2013 type of event happening again. Plus, SJ's net front presence might be difficult for him to stop. The Bruins are tough to play against & have great bottom lines. I just see SJ giving them trouble. I don't like Joe Thornton, but they are my pick.

Can't say I feel bad for you, Oil had 1st overall pick, but the best (only) player we have from that draft is Khaira. At least you ended up with Gustafsson from our draft.

He didn't look too good in the playoffs eh, Rick?

He's been a scoring machine in the regular season though.

Will be interesting to see if he looks to re-sign in CLB or looks to test the open market.

The Hawks lost that series on merit.

Crawford was really terrible mostly throughout - so much that the questions about his "elite" status - or even NHL status - were not hyperbole.

I remember Foley and Olczyk - as game 6 was winding down into an obvious series-ending loss - talking about how the team needed a major restructuring - that there were only 4 top-6 skaters (Toews, Sharp, Hossa, Kane)....

Oh - and a terrible play by Leddy on Boedker's game winning goal in the video, not to mention a terrible let-in by Crawford - how did he not stop that? But that was typical of that series, IIRC.
