fully agreed on how horrendous the officiating has been throughout the entire playoffs.

and as a diehard avs fan, the comment about being 1mm offside is spot on. that whole thing was absolutely ridiculous. i understand why the league deemed it was “going by the book”, but there is simply no image or replay i saw that was definitive enough to overturn the call on the ice.

then of course moments later san jose goes up 3-1 and that was pretty much it despite a late push by the avs.

i don’t think i’m being avs-biased by being pissed about it. if the same exact thing had been called the opposite way (had a sharks player been leaving the ice and they scored a goal), i’d be sitting here saying the sharks got robbed.

reviewing offside is one of the most asinine things the league has allowed. it’s totally in line with the days of goals being overturned because a player had 1mm of his skate inside the blue of goalie zone

I mean, Gary Bettman came out and said over a year ago, that officials were supposed to take a quick look, and if a call was clearly missed, overturn it; but if there was any doubt, call on the ice stands. The linesmen already aren't supposed to scrutinize to death a shot to see if it's 1mm off. Certain teams, certain game states, they just do anyways.

Hopefully the NHL will wake up and revise their replay system. They will spend 5 minutes trying to determine if a skate was 1 inch offside 30 seconds before a goal (and having zero affect on the play). However, they won't use video to look at blatant mistakes by their officials - hand pass by Meier, puck over glass by Perron, 5 minute major to Eakins etc.

Regarding the Senators' refusal to invest in analytics. Simple answer as to why they haven't move in this direction. Why would Mr. Shallow Pockets spend money that he feels he doesn't have to spend?

the fact that offsides can even be reviewed is a joke. it was an idiotic, kneejerk reaction to one goal (scored by Duchene) that was like 5 feet offside. it shouldn't be reviewable at all.

I believe the refs need help, one ref on ice and one or two off ice. Obviously these refs are only human and while I agree there have been some horrible one sided called games which I do blame the refs for, there is still plenty of room for overall improvement and most of all from the league we need to have transparency. Thank you.

There's now rumours that Spezza might be considered as a UFA signing... what a great idea, pick up a one-dimensional player who's already at least 2 seasons past his prime, coming off a pair of years where he didn't crack 30pts, and in 2018/19 played 3min/gp less total ice time than any of White, Pageau, or Tierney.

Jesus, I could barely conjure up a dumber pair of moves if you paid me. Maybe we should check to see if Brian Lee is still around to bolster the RHD situation. Seriously, Spezza offers little more than Gaborik would if they were forced to play him next season. If they really have money to spend, they'd be far better off taking on a salary dump plus a high draft pick from a team up against the cap.
