lol I never heard that one before.
P.S. I had forgotten Van Assenhoven is now the supervisor of officiating. He's going on the list. Apparently years ago my friend was right and he did suck - 2sticks1puck

I have a legit question I was discussing recently with friends related to this:
When I'd go to Ranger games back in the day, the crowd would always use the ref's name when they were PO'd about something, i.e. "Fraser Sucks" or "Koharski Sucks", etc.
Now, I hear crowds chant the standard Ref, You Suck. Is that because they don't know who the officials are or is it because the game has switched to 2 officials, so no one can decide which one to get angry at? |

Its the 2 linesman too. I believe any of the 4 could have made that call. I mean the play is already in the zone, so what the (frank) are the linesman looking at, and the puck was hit with a hand with no one around, it wasn't like a scrum or anything. How they all missed it is insane |

I could understand if it were something that happened away from the play, but the puck was literally involved and there were four of them looking and it's pretty inexplicable that not one of the four saw it |

Good to see.
They missed that call because they were too busy watching for an offside play.
And that missed delay of game, woof. |

At this point, I'd like people to notice that Tim Peel is the standby. Just in case people hope it was improve if the others refs are removed from the series |

It may have to do with the 2 ref system, but it just seems like fewer refs are known by name. I'm not really sure the reasoning for that, but it seems to be true. |

It’s a very simple answer to a very complicated sport. Eliminate the tablet have the refs or linesman call like normal, have someone in every arena for every game upstairs INTENTLY watching every minute of every game, and simply buzz down when a bad call was made. It would literally take 5 seconds, most of the time.
All these Twitter people freaking out, or media are making a mountain out of a molehill. It’s not that difficult of a solution to basically have a baby sitter close by. It’s sad but it’s what they have to do |

We should start a list of officials that we hated back in the day. I forgot how bad Koharski was. So far we have
Schick
McGeough
Koharski
One of my friends hated Van Massenhoven, but I don't remember hating him - 2sticks1puck
Wally Harris... oh my lord was that guy garbage! I always thought he looked like Walrusman from Star Wars. |

Had to look that up, man you are taking it back. I will add him to the list since he was also a ref supervisor. |

That seems like what the plan is going to eventually be. Have one or two off-ice officials reviewing everything and give them the ability to contact the officials during game-play if they missed something. I believe someone on twitter used an example from rugby, who uses that exact practice. |

Not to defend them, and not saying last night is a good example, but the speed of the game has long passed by the old days. It’s a different game now where 90% of the players can skate like the wind. Years ago maybe 50% of the players were great skaters, it was all brains and brawn otherwise |

You are 100% right. There are a couple of older guys by comparison on this list, but alot of these guys are close to the players age. It makes it almost impossible to ever get real senior officials unless they start right out of college. |

It absolutely has and the NHL is majorly at fault for not addressing the issue. They need more eyes and better use of the available technology. An off-ice official or two that has access to several angles and the ability to communicates in real-time with on-ice officials is really a necessity.
I absolutely loathe lengthy reviews, but I think an off-ice guy working in lockstep with Toronto will both help increase the accuracy of the calls AND keep those stupid 5 minute reviews to a minimum. I still think a 60-90 second clock should be applied to all reviews, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. |

It feels like half the time they can’t figure out how to use the tablet how do I turn this on? I know I have trouble with them haha. But If you eliminate the tablet that would take a lot of the time issues away imo. Officials on ice make w/e call and can be trumped by someone upstairs if need be. It’s really that simple. Minor penalties excluded tho. Goals, Majors, offside, hand pass, etc comes from an upstairs buzz down if it’s has to be changed. Give them a horn or something rather then a whistle

Yes, and it definitely has to be someone at each game, NOT in Toronto.

Yea for sure. Even give the on ice guy a thing in his ear where he can hear the guy upstairs in real time. They have those things nowadays |

Yeah it needs to go from a 4-man crew to a 5 or 6 man crew, with one or two guys working off the ice in either the penalty box or up high. Maybe one at ice-level in the box and one eye in the sky. |

You could maybe get away with one ref on the ice with two linensmen and 2 guys upstairs. Not sure if that would fly tho |
