Love the details when trying to translate short term decisions into long term benefits and consequences. Clearly the trade of Brassard was winner. However, it will take more time to determine just how bad was the trade of Zibanejad. No doubt, Brassard was a huge contributor in the run to the conference finals a few years back and that was fun.

But, I think the trading away of Zibanejad was the first great tipping point. He was traded for a veteran player on a low cost contract, rather than pay for a new contract and, perhaps, a signing bonus. List the names (starting with Alfredsson and Spezza) of the players who have been dealt or walked before a new deal had to be signed.

Bobby Ryan got a contract (ouch) because fans were still angry over the Alfredsson fiasco. Don't forget Methot. Team blamed Phaneuf, but we all know it was merely another smoke screen to move another salary.

Senators front office has become fully complicit in covering up Melnyk's chronic poverty. They tell so many lies in trying to rationalize irrational behaviour. I think they come to believe their own lies. When an organization starts to believe their own lies, it is nothing more than a pack of dogs feeding off of its own dung.

I think BND looks like a good prospect, and I love the trade to get him(the pick).

I do wonder if they should have drafted Sandin though, even if they have Brannstrom and Chabot.

Dorion seems really high on BND though, and it's only been one year, so way too early to make any judgement there.

Nobody in Ottawa was happy with the deal in its original form however it has never been as painful as the multiple other transactions including Karlsson, Stone and Duchene within the last year.

Zibanejad is ancient history in terms of significance. But it was important in that he was the first one where it was clear that the owner could not afford to resign him. However, like Zibanejad, Turris, Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, Dzingle and others to be named later were traded in order to avoid signing new contracts.

Sometimes I sit and think that if Ottawa had just signed zibanejad and kept methot and let ceci go to vegas that Ottawa would have contended in 2017-2018 instead of finishing near the bottom.

Although I guess Boucher's coaching, hoffman's gf and anderson and condon's mediocrity may have still done us in.

I just feel like zibanejad duchene, pageau and smith down the middle wouldn't have been bad at all.

Forgot to mention also that Karlsson-Methot and Chabot-Phaneuf would be way better pairings on D than karlsson-chabot and phaneuf-ceci and that would have helped with the goaltending issues.

There is no doubt in my mind that Chabot will be traded if Melnyk continues on as owner. You can't sign what you can't pay! The only silver lining is they keep building an asset base that will pay huge dividends for the new ownership group.

The Brassard trade to Pittsburgh was a solid move by the organization. Great timing too.

The Brassard/Zibanejad trade was an El Cheapo move by Mr. Shallow Pockets on two fronts.

1. It was another example of the short term thinking "I need to get a round of playoffs revenue" that informed decision making for the recent past. Mr. Shallow Pockets dictated his GM do whatever it took to get into the playoff. Brassard, in the short term, was viewed as a better ticket to the playoffs than Zibanejad. This type of 'squeak into the playoffs at all costs' mentality finally came crashing down the past two seasons.

2. As noted, it also saved Mr. Shallow Pockets from having to re-up Zibanejad at a market competitive salary. This precedent has continued to play out with Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, etc.

As has been said over and over in this forum, the Senators are destined to go nowhere for however long Mr. Shallow Pockets is the team owner.
