The Nordiques franchise also got to go from being a team that was perennial not good enough, to winning a couple cups and being a serious contender for a decade as the Avs.
The Flyers got a brilliant young player who had injuries take a toll on his career, and no cups. You have to wonder how history had played out if that trade didn't happen.

I've seen the Panthers play enough the past few seasons by virtue of them being an Atlantic division team and I agree that goaltending and defense are their true weak spots. Lu is breaking down and Reimer wasn't capable to stepping up. The games that Lu is healthy for and plays good, they look like a playoff team. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have many of those left.

I enjoyed this article and agree that giving up too much for Malkin wouldn't be a wise move by the Panthers. Go after younger players that will be in their prime for 6/7 years. Sign free agents and make trades to improve their defense and this team will be set to make a run for the cup in a couple of years.

Hey Leafsfann,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I know it’s a really different situation completely, but it just got me thinking of the Lindros stuff.

Thanks for coming back, Islansjet. Glad to see you on the board again!

I’m with you. I’d like to invest in some moves that help bolster the defense and goaltending right now.

Malkin is a tremendous player, but the Cats have some other areas to address that are more urgent IMO.

Here's the reality of a Malkin trade, which will never happen by the way...

1) The Penguins will NEVER get a proper return. Unless they were in a rebuild where they can get a million firsts and prospects, the return will never be right for the Pens.

2) The Team trading for Malkin will have to give for more than they should, which seems counterintuitive to what I wrote previously.

I mean, the Pens Shouldn't be seeking anything less than Trochek, Dadanov, Tippet and a couple of a firsts. Clearly that sounds bonkers, but for a generational talent? The issue here is age. If this was three years ago, my trade idea wouldn't sound so nuts. You'd have Malkin and Barkov as your #1/#2, a younger Malkin, be able to attract better UFAs to build that team.

Chances are Malkin rebounds from a, by his standards, mediocre season, so any team that gets him will instantly be immensely more competitive.

But Trochek, Tippet, Borgstrom and "at least" a second. While that may be more toward reality than what I'd want, it would still be embarrasing for the Pens. Malkin just needs to stay.

A Malkin trade would only happen under two conditions:
- Malkin specifically asks to be traded (which, as far as I know, he has not).
- Malkin is also willing to unconditionally waive his full NTC, in which case the Pens would shop for the best trade and not be forced to make one with specific teams.

From the Pens' perspective, it is almost impossible to get a fair return for Malkin in any trade. In the case of the Panthers I would their first round picks for the next five years (which they would never give).

A most likely scenario is that Malkin eventually goes back to Russia to finish his career. Hopefully that won't be anytime soon.

Good break down and thanks for that.

It seems like there's always Malkin trade rumors (for whatever reason) going into each offseason. i'm assuming it's because of the level of talent he is and people like to speculate what the Pens could get in return?

I totally agree with the age point that you brought up. If this was a few years ago and the Panthers were desperate for a 2C, and it was the last piece they needed, the package going to Pittsburgh might not sound that wild. I just think the Cats have other areas to address that are more dire.

Dadanov would never be part of any deal, the biggest reason being his NMC.

Personally a realistic package value for Malkin would probably be along the lines of Two 1st rounders, a good roster player and a prospect, but as a Flyer fan that dirty muppet looking frankenstein is worth Pu.

I'm just giving an idea of what the Pens SHOULD be seeking. I wasn't trying to get down to these kind of specifics and my overall point is a trade like this won't happen for the Pens.

A lot of teams would want Malkin but would they pay the Pens what he is worth? Not too many teams will give up key roster players, "A" prospects and high draft picks for a 32 year old who is paid $9.5 mil per for the next 3 years. The Panthers should steer clear.

Malkin is a great player, but I think FL trading for him would be a huge mistake on their part. $9.5 million cap hit would greatly hinder them filling other, more pressing, needs and the cost to obtain him would only create more holes to fill. It just seems as it would be a total veering off the path of building a foundation for long term success that Tallon says is their main goal. FL is much more than a Malkin away from threatening for the Cup right now. As was said above; if this were three years ago then it's a different story, but he'd never have been made available at that time, either. He should be a Penguin until he retires from the NHL, and probably should be the last Pen to ever wear 71.
Malkin is 33, if he does decline over the final years of his deal, it would be easier for Pittsburgh to swallow the cap hit with the memories of the Cups he helped them win.

No way DT trades all suggested assets for Malkin. If I'm trading a ton of assets it's for a number defenseman, if there is one.

I don’t think DT would sell the farm for Malkin. He really has no need to. The Cats are set offensively. If they can somehow lose Reimer and roll a tandem of Bob and Lu on paper they’d look good in net. There are a number of options to improve their D corps as well. I would think DT would be much more likely to bring in Trouba than he would Malkin. Should be a fun offseason for all you Miami fans lol

Lol, not at all. Just a joking reference to "Quebec Panthers". In the past, usually an article with a phrase like that in the title would have had a very different theme.

I don't see the Malkin thing happening. I don't see Dale trading away any of the core guys - Barkov, Huberdeau, Trocheck, Ekblad, or Matheson. I think Dadanov is close to that status and possibly Vatrano too. With another year of solid play, Borgstrom will probably be considered a core member. Q will probably bring some new ideas and perspective, but give it a season before anything changes. Also, I understand Malkin wants to be the clear #1 center and that won't happen with Barkov on the same team.

I think Panarin and Bobrovsky will be headed to Sunrise. As we discussed in a previous blog, I think they're a package deal. Bringing in Q opens the door for both of them.

That means that the big moves the Panthers will be making that don't involve the core or Panarin/Bob, will be moving Reimer and looking for affordable help on D. I don't know who/what that entails, but that's where I'm putting my money.

Go Panthers!

Like others have said, unless the Panthers really want to play ball, I dont see a deal happening. I think Rutherford is #1 blowing off some steam with Malkin. A lot of people have said that management/coaching was more concerned about Malkin's attitude this season than his stats.

I think Huberdeau would be the guy the Penguins want (I dont expect Florida to trade him). I like Trocheck, but I dont see a deal where he is the main piece going back.

I totally forgot that Bure was Captain of the Panthers. Imagine if his knees never gave out on him, he probably would have been able to add a few more 50 goal seasons.

Is there a promising, ready for the NHL defensive defenseman who is stuck behind more established players somewhere? That's what I'd like to see a deal made for, but I also don't know who that player may be.
Trouba seems determined to choose his next team. (He will be UFA next summer, correct?) Even if the Jets traded him, he still might not be interested in signing an extension with that new team. He could be a free agent target for FL next summer, if they don't find what they want this year.
