Quick thought on Hughes...what number do you think he wears? Any chance Greene surrenders the 6 to him?...I would like to see him pick a number that would be all his was thinking 82 for year Devils came to NJ!

I guess I might be in the minority but I am fine with going in to the season with our forward group. That's not to say we couldn't or shouldn't improve it, but I am not really interested in these small, 2nd line wingers. I think we have enough players who can fill that role. If we do try to get another forward, give me someone elite like Duchene or Panarin or someone that can provide a good presence in front of the net and add a different dimension to the team. We saw how valuable Maroon was here in his short time even though he is not a quick, skillful player.

Not sure a veteran, a guy who has played every minute of his nhl career with the team, and current captain, surrenders his number to a rookie. Not sure what that would say about a kid if he even asked, in my opinion.

Mathew Perreault is exactly the type of responsible play driver you need on the left side. Going after him and Trouba makes sense for both teams. The jets will ask for one of smith or Severson, one of, Zacha ot Bratt, and a 2nd.

My hope is Bastian becomes a younger more agile version of Maroon. Big body around the net.

Would be nice. He'd be a good compliment to the rest of the team.

If getting Ebs secures you Hall, you (frank)ing do it. No questions asked.

But let us dig into this option further.

Cons:

The issue with Eberle is that he hasn't been able to find his ideal form since that 76 point season and the few years after; inept defensively; small stature; can be lacking on the forecheck at times; will need a supporting cast to get the best of him (cannot carry a line);

Pros:
High Hockey IQ, agile, offensive threat; His career average in terms of points is around 60 per season; top 6 winger without a doubt (solid supporting piece); built for the modern game; if signing Ebs secures Hall, you do it (not to mention Hall has had good chemistry with Ebs in the past)

Deployment:

His best years were in a line consisting of Hall and RNH.

He isn't an offensive dynamo as in he can carry a line, but with the right cast, he can shine. A (defensively minded preferred) center who can excel in a two-way role (cover for Ebs and allow him to push offensively), coupled with a dynamic winger who can push possession will be the ideal conditions for Eberle.

Hall-Hughes or Hichier-Eberle

That line would do well against any team in the league.

The issue, of course, is the cap it'll take to get him.

He is gonna want 7-8m based on his career, the current cap, and how F/A tends to overpay, but if Shero can get him at 6m, it actually wouldn't be bad at all. Maybe 8m for 5y could be the worst case scenario? Contract ends when he turns 33.

Nonetheless, barring this down year (however he had a stellar showing in the playoffs), he is on average a 60 point producer and will improve the top 6 of nearly every NHL team. It just comes down to the price point and tangibles involved in signing him.

Nyquist Zucker (if we're talking trade) and maybe even Eberle would be better for the top 6 role than Perrault, not that he isn't serviceable. We should keep Severson, Smith and Bratt.

Minnesota seems pretty intent on reshuffling their group and rolling the dice on young guys (Donato, Rask, Fiala). If they could be talked into McLeod, Quenneville/Speers/Gignac and one of these 2nd round picks for Zucker that is a trade I would make in a heartbeat.

If ebs demands 7-8 and signs to that, then hall will cost 12-13 easy
- shvingter88

Hall ain't gonna cost that much.

Best comparable to Hall would honestly be the Stone contract. As for Hall himself, let us not forget that he has had a history of injuries. Health should also be a factor involved when it comes to value.

I see him getting signed at 10m considering the cap, maybe even 10.5m. But for him to get 12-13? Not gonna happen even if Ebs signs at 7m.

I tend to agree with you about Hall's salary. I think it should be around 9mil, but the Devils are probably going to have to overpay a tad. So I could see 10-10.5. And that scares me considering he's had a bunch of injuries and his game revolves around speed which will absolute decline over the course of his contract. I still think they have to do it but I acknowledge the risk.

Maybe a prospect would step up (boqvist???)..yes it would be ideal to get another established scorer but I think they will be fine honestly..the big factor is bratt and hall can they stay freakin healthy

I agree with most of what you said.

However, Hall's style of play can be kind of described as a bull. A dominating force that wreaks havoc through his physicality and speed, as well as his tactical awareness. He forces his way through opponents and isn't afraid to go to the dirty areas. He pushes possession and is a dynamo on any line. With that being said, Hall's health problems is a considerable issue to take note of when negotiating his new contract as his style of play will lead to a deterioration of his health as already evident.

He has dealt with a long list of injuries already as a result of his style of play (shoulder injury that resulted in surgery, multiple knee injuries, and cracked ankle bones and bruised/sprained ankles being the major ones). We already know that he was out for a major part of this season due to an injury on his knee which resulted in major knee surgery.

With that being said, NJ just cannot afford to lose Hall. Pretty self-explanatory as to why.

If Shero loses Hall for nothing or just picks via trade, that will be a huge negative when it comes to looking at his tenure with NJ.

Kind of stuck in a pickle, but I wish for only the best. For both Hall and NJ.

His two numbers he's worn over the years are 6 and 43. No way Greene loses 6. Brett Seney wore 43 last year, not sure he's "important" enough (by no means a lock to be on the NHL team) to definitely keep that number, though not sure how that sort of thing works practically, would Seney have to go out of his way to offer the number to Hughes ala Coleman giving #40 to Grabner? I feel like in NHL culture it's a weird look for an older player to sacrifice a number to a rookie. Also very possible 43 means nothing to Seney and was just a random number assigned at camp one year.

Past that, I know Quinn Hughes has worn 7 in the past and that number is free. Maybe 66 but then you deal with the "backlash" of the people who feel 66 should be essentially retired league wide ala 99.

Would the Devils do?

To NJ: Jacob Trouba, Mathieu Perreault

To WPG: Damon Severson, Pavel Zacha, 2019 2nd round pick

I think Zacha is more valuable to the Devils than he is in a trade right now, as I imagine his trade value isn't very high. I guess the caveat being some GM may overvalue him as a relatively recent top 10 pick (ala Chiarelli with Reinhart and Strome) but past getting a stupid offer like that I'd rather ride him out and see if he can become a real solid contributor, especially now that with (likely) Hughes in the picture he's no longer expected to develop into a legit top 6 center for the team.

Probably not. Biggest variable here is Trouba's contract. But even assuming they signed him, I'm not a Severson hater so I'm not reayd to ditch him and his reasonable contract. And Perreault is 31, Zacha 22...I'm not sure that's something that makes a ton of sense especially if the Devils are set at C. And that's a high 2nd rounder...

So, probably not IMO.

I totally agree about the perceived value from NJ, which is why I just can't see him as part of a deal unless it was for some other reclamation/change of scenery player. Funny, you mention Strome but I actually think Dylan Strome is an example of this type of trade. Not saying Zacha is that level talent, but that trade was similar in nature to what I am getting at.

Some quick thoughts:

Seney wore 43 because he's a huge Richard Petty fan. Nah, just kidding. But really I don't the Hughes picking a number is going to be an issue. Give him 93 because he's kind of like Doug Gilmour. Small and skilled as (frank).

Why aren't we trading for Quinn Hughes?

I don't think Shero can lay off an ex-Penguin. I'm betting we hear about that poopty defenseman again. I mean he's the guy who brought us Lovejoy, Moore, Quincey and Prout.

While we solve try to solve our 2nd line winger problems, I think we are pretty set for the bottom six. Travis, Coleman, Zacha, Woods, and say Rooney and/or Ken Agostino plus Seney or Bastian or another rookie/kid would be fine....
