Beautiful win by the Canes, and THEY deserved it, They were the better team in game 7.

Slavin and Pesce are pure super stars. Reminds me a little of Keith/Seabs in their heydey.

All 4 Div leaders knocked out in round 1 - has that ever happened?

In good times and bad, Hawks are the trendsetters. . .all the other teams copying us again.

Pretty good Game-7 and especially the OT's. Great win for the Canes. Bingo is dancing somewhere. I thought the Canes had the better of the play, especially in the 2nd OT.

All 4 division winners knocked out in the 1st round - WOWZA!

Smart, Smart, Smart, game plan by the Canes. They played dump and chase all night long and forced the Caps to skate 200 feet. They wore them down and frustrated them with intense forechecking.

Congrats to Carolina and TT. They absolutely deserved it....and Tuevo was the best Cane with his incredible passing and key goals.

It is, will be interesting to see how the Canes will respond having played such a tough series and how the Islanders will respond after having been idle for 10 days or whatever its been.

Hey Scott. I’ve seen you calling for more NA players recently. I’m a bit more of a purist in that I don’t care where they come from as long as they can play hockey. We have a few guys in the pipeline that have shown that they can play an aggressive style in Entwhistle, Kurashev, and Barrat.

With Hayden, he’s actually been given a number of chances and hasn’t really done enough with them. He gets out of position a lot and while I like the fact that he willingly goes to the corners and has the ability to dig the puck out, he doesn’t do it often enough. In my opinion he is likely gone, but only a couple people know for sure. If he was going to have any success I think it would be under Colliton. He coached him before and he seemed to get good results in Rockford. It just never really translated in Chicago.

I have similar thoughts on Hayden. If he applied himself and played physical every shift, then he'd be a keeper and a reliable contributor game in and game out. The fact is that he isn't. I wouldn't be upset if he was traded but he has a similar fate as Perlini if on next year's roster: play consistent and apply your talents or else take a seat.

While smaller, Sikura engages more consistently than Hayden and Perlini and has shown he can contribute in ways that don't involve goals and assists. Yes, he needs to get stronger but at least his compete level is high and can be relied on to do the little things to help the team win as his scoring waits to catch up.

As for more North American players than Europeans, I'm with you that each player's style of play and the skill set matters more than nationality. Plenty of examples of physical, gritty, and tough as nails Europeans, i.e. Landeskog, Radulov, Malkin, Hedman, Tarasenko, Kopitar, Voracek, etc.

To a degree yes, but going into the playoffs, would anyone say that CBJ had a better 3rd and 4th line than Tampa? It's not like Tampa hasn't had playoff success in the recent past. True, they have not won a cup, but they have been in one and progressed far in other years.

To your other points, I'm personally of the mind that it matters more about how the 4th line players "buy-in" to their role on the team than the actual players on that line. I look at it from two viewpoints:

1) Guys like Eager, Fraser, Kopecky, Kruger, etc are not really good players when you look at them singularly. Put them on a line with two other guys with clear purpose and they become very effective.

2) Most of us are very happy with Drake, but he was lost in EDM. I can't remember if it was his end of season interview, or maybe before that, but he said that when he got here, he was told to just play strong on the puck and work with the guys on your line. In EDM it was more of trying to find where he fit.

- Chunk

I guess it could be a little from Column A and a little from Column B: define your team's style of play then either coach strategies that implement that style no matter who is on the roster and/or draft and acquire players who already play that style so it's natural for them to acclimate to the way the team expects you to play.

Unless something has changed I am unaware of,
all the division winner are designated to pick after all the eliminated Cup teams save for the iast four, the 4 teams getting to conference finals and the runner up for the Cup and then, at 31, the winner.

Not at the start. Pesce was brutal in the 1st period. Seemed to settle down once he was re-united with Slavin after TVR had to miss some shifts due to being dinged a bit.

To be fair to Hayden, he really hasn't been given a role to make his own. I don't know if he can be effective in a 4th line role where his role is to a be shutdown guy. Asking a veteran to play 8 minutes a night and make an impact is tough. Its even harder for a young who feels he has to prove something every time he steps on the ice. To me, Hayden gets caught up in trying to do too much instead of just playing the game.

I meant to comment yesterday about which of the Rockford guys they bring back. I think Johnson should be brought back for sure. I think given the chance for a consistent time, he can be a useful 4th line guy with Kampf. If not, he plays well in Rockford and does a lot in the community in Rockford.

Definitely agree with your last comment on Hayden that he is trying to do too much rather than just playing on instinct. Simple, fundamental hockey and a chance to play would be good for him.

I think Johnson, Highmore, and Nilsson are most likely to be in the mix for final roster spots as the Rockford candidates. Really don't want to see Fortin up again.

Possibly Louis, Knott and Noel get look sees at some point just to see what they can bring before the Hawks cut bait with them. Low expectations for all three, tbh. Career minor leaguers, or they resurface many years down the road on another NHL team like Froese and Holl.

https://thehockeynews.com...h-a-vengeance-next-season

The Hockey News' take on what the Golden Knights may do to manage their salary cap, particularly with blueline personnel. At least on these boards, Miller and McNabb have been favored as targets to nab for the Hawks back end. THN projects those two to remain in Vegas with Holden and Merrill on the move instead.

"The good news, however, is that Vegas will be able to pare down the collective cap hit of its roster without suffering many – or any – significant losses, and stuffing David Clarkson back on the long-term injured reserve already takes $5.25-million off the books gets the Golden Knights back under the spending limit with relative ease. That said, it would be no surprise if blueliners Nick Holden and Jon Merrill, who carry respective $2.2-million and $1.38-million cap hits are sent packing. That’s particularly so given it would allow the Golden Knights to keep their top four of Nate Schmidt, Shea Theodore, Brayden McNabb and Colin Miller intact with a cheaper bottom pairing rounding out the roster."

No mention of Eakin's future with the team.
