However, to say the Flyers did the right thing, is a bit foolish. By your logic, we will have to demolish the Jefferson memorial, and shoot George Washington into space, banishing him to oblivion, as their actions were far more agregious. It’s a slippery slope, and once it gets started, no one wants to be the one to step in and say enough.

If this was the right thing to do, where does it end? Yes, we think differently today, and rightly so, but running from our history, does no one any favors. Learning lessons from it does, as you pointed out. So your take on Kate Smith is playing both sides, ultimately coming down on eliminating her significance.

I expect more from you, given your stellar work as a Philly journalist. Bill Meltzer, wrote a terrific piece that was posted here. I applaud him for his insightful, and thoughtful take.

I like the way you say that white people shouldn't get a say... that by definition is a racist comment. If i have to explain it to you I will. You see you are excluding the opinion of voice of someone based on their color. You see how this works. That is racist and discriminatory. This country was built on free speech and now someone like yourself decide that yea everyone has free speech but in some cases you don't. That is much more dangerous then listening to a woman sing who has been passed away for decades and might have done something 50 years ago ever will be.

Kate Smith is part of the Flyers fanbase. She was not owned by the organization, she became part of the fanbase, The tradition of her coming out to play in big games was solely due to the fans reaction to her and the teams response to her in the early days, The look on fans eyes when they realize they are in for a "Special" event when the music starts at games, the love of a singer by fans there to enjoy a sporting event is nothing short of amazing - To take it away from the fans - though corporate "neutral is safe" policies, the fans feel her legacy was unfairly stolen from us. She deserves better treatment than a garbage bag over her statue before her complete removal - Generic questionable songs compared to directly removing a legacy both from her family and we Flyers fans - who is really making the questionable decisions.
