Justin Lowe: Housekeeping Items
Even though the Blackhawks season is over, it's been a hectic time with the exciting news from the Draft Lottery and some great daily playoff hockey.

It's time to take a step back and look at a few items I have yet to cover. Let's get into it.

Seems like a lot of teams trapping which is kind of boring though Tampa getting swept was pretty funny if only for the torts interviews.

If anything this shows how diluted the talent is in the league. I think the NBA model would be more conducive to growing the game and entertaining fans and getting tv money then these meh finales.

That Columbus vs. Tampa series was epic. I had Tampa winning it all. Man was I wrong and I have to say probably the biggest upset of the playoffs this year. Whoever plays the Jackets in the next round will have their hands full. Also I am surprised that the Preds are looking at a elimination game. That team has to much talent but it seems like they lost their swagger. They are getting outworked by Dallas who are not getting the credit they deserve.

Your "Rockford Awards" (with the exception of Sikura the Younger) seem to have gone to more or less career AHL-ers - not to players with the potential to be contributors in the NHL.

Gilbert and Carlsson maybe?

Ian Mitchell going back to school - he probably was watching Cale Makar slot into the Avs lineup and realize how far he has to go before he himself is an impact player with the Hawks. Maker is an absolute star in the making.

One thing Bowman better be thinking about is who is going to be his #1 goaltender over the next 3-4 years. And he had better not be thinking Colin Delia.

Justin, my first thought when Hawks moved up to 3rd in draft was to grab the big center Cozens. I see last night he had 2 goals and 3 assists in the under 18s.
I know he is a possibility. Where do you think Hawks are leaning. You think, like I do....it is Cozens to lose and that barring something unforeseen he is a Hawk in a couple of months time????

I said it once, all say it again.I hope the Hawks draft Turcotte with there first pick.I have been watching the under 18 tourney and he is far away better then Cozen, or the Russian player. The only kid I haven’t seen is the Defencemen from Vancouver. In this year draft class, their are a lot of forwards to choose from, but my choice so far is Turcotte.

Trader David Poile is running out of racetrack in his efforts to win a Cup. Brian Boyle and Wayne Simmonds aren't going to put him over the top, he's got a 37 yr old #1 goaltender, Kyle Turris isn't what he thought he would be and he is going to have to pay Roman Josi a zillion dollars.

Avs are the coming superpower in the Central. The Preds and Jets have had their chances and failed.

I will reserve judgment on this for now. That team has to be more consistent. It l
Just makes you appreciate what the Hawks were able to do for the last decade. All these teams with no Cups but cap hell to navigate through.

Thanks for the update Ty!

I have the go with TBL getting swept in 4 as the most surprising and TOR vs BOS as the most entertaining.

Will be interesting over the next few years to see who is cut out for the NHL among the dman prospects... not only the highly touted but others in the mix.

Edit - DAl and NSH has been real entertaining too.

Right, appreciate what the team and the coaches were able to accomplish and especially the grind the players went thru to win 4 series each time. It is gruelling to win 1 let alone 3 Cups.

When you read that JL says the Hawks won't draft Caufield at #3:

Both the Hogs and Fuel will have new head coaches which is a good thing for the entire Blackhawks organization top to bottom. Having all teams playing the same systems and implementing the same strategies can’t be under stated. Key to smoother transitions for prospects as they rise up the ranks or get demoted for more seasoning.

I think you’re on to something with this comparison of Makar’s situation with Mitchell’s. Tyler said something similar, i.e. jump to the pros when the opportunity is right and a spot is more readily available.

Bowman probably signs Kampf, Sikura, Perlini, Forsling, Koekkoek, Ejdsell, Forsberg, Hillman, Louis, and Johnson at reasonable short term contracts. Hopefully he signs Kubalik and Wedin (and maybe another European FA) too. That should help depth at the NHL and AHL level. It also will give them pieces to use in trades. Whatever young guys that are still here when training camp starts can let their play speak for itself.

Bowman can focus on adding 2 agitators, physical players (with some size, speed, skill, IQ) for the 3rd and 4th lines for small dollars and short term.

Then his main focus is a top 4 defender and high end 3C. He has cap space and he also has NHL level players, prospects, and draft picks. Although I highly doubt this years #3 pick is in play, I could see our 2nd round pick this year or our first and/or 2nd next year being in play.

It should be interesting to see who is traded from the NHL roster. Sentiment is AA is a goner.

I would say one major trade, one medium size ($5 mil to $7.5 mil) signing, and a minor (but significant) trade.

A good coach at Rockford is important. Whoever it is probably will have more raw talent there then they have had since they became affiliated with the Hawks. But they need someone that develop the raw talent (the right way and in a hurry).

When is Ek going to change your "by line" from Justin Lowe. Do we need to send it to Ek as a rumor first?

I remember reading somewhere that he’s been in close contact and working with the Blackhawks Hockey Operations staff. Can’t remember where I saw this, but reading between the lines I got the impression this might happen. I tend to think this was a joint decision between Mitchell and the Blackhawks. That this was actually the best thing for his long term development.

I am enjoying the Toronto/Boston series as these original 6 teams are having another great series.

Hoping Boston pulls it out.

With the addition of Stone Alex Tuch is regulated to 3rd line right wing ($4.5 mil.), a big power forward with hands. Brayden McNabb ($2.3 mil), is a top 4 defenseman who is a stay at home tough physical defenseman. I wonder who Vegas would want (considering the cap hell they are in) from the Hawks to trade those 2?

They aren't moving Tuch. They will move other spare parts long before him. Unless, of course an offer wows them and i don't think the Hawks are in a position to WOW another team.

McNabb is okay at that price. He would be good to pair with Murphy. There are some parts of his game I don't like so much. He doesn't move the puck all that great. Meaning he doesn't make quick decision with the puck. I would still take him, tho.
