Justin Lowe: 10 Thoughts on Blackhawks Year-End Press Conference The Blackhawks season is officially over and on Sunday, they held their year-end press conference. The players spoke, Colliton reflects and Bowman plotted for future success.

There weren't a lot of surprises from Bowman, Colliton or the players, but there were interesting tidbits that I want to touch on. Here are the top 10.

Hell of a hire and that picture terrifies me that another team has Quenneville... just so happy he's in the East.

To use Mike Commodore's catch phrase - Brent Seabrook and/or Duncan Keith *PackYourSh!t.

Maybe, just maybe, Q wants some vet D he's familiar with and that vet D will waive their NMC to play for a coach they're familiar with.

I love what both those players have contributed to the Hawks but, allowing the 2nd most goals against this season and I believe the highest number of high danger scoring chances the defense needs a makeover 1st and foremost.

I’m surprised he didn’t end up somewhere that’s a little closer to being a contender. Personally, I can’t fathom what else he has to prove. If I were him I’d sit back on my pile of cash, be on the golf course every day, and eating dinner on a yacht every night.

A lot of horse tracks down in FLA. You know Q likes his ponies.

Lot of golf to be had down in Florida. He gets to add to his pile of cash while semi retiring to Florida.

Now just have to pray to all the gods that somehow Seabrook ends up down there.....

There are some nice suburbs around Miami... Sure Q won't stay down there during the 110% humidity summers.

Additional Strome comment - I think he said he was going to spend most of his summer in Chicago. A good sign.

Additional Colliton comment - indicating he would expect all forwards to become responsible without the puck - getting back quickly on defense, making sure the blue liners have support in the d-zone. A good sign.

Great blog TC.

I think Stan needs to get creative this summer. Based on what I’ve heard and read from other teams, I’d look at the following

1. TB is not in cap trouble yet, but they may be in the next few years. They’re looking especially thin on D. I’d approach them to see if they’d be open to a Gustafsson for Cirelli swap.

2. Carolina still needs help down the middle, the Blackhawks need a defensive minded puck mover. I’d approach them about AA+Forslng for Brett Pesce. If they balked, I’d go as far to offer Beaudin in place of Forsling. Pesce would really help the top 4.

3. I would not move Murphy.

4. I’d try to sign Paquette out of Tampa.

5. I’d move Hayden, Sikura for picks if possible. Hayden needs to play and I’m not impressed with Sikura for this team.

Thoughts?

Tampa won't resign Girardi or Coburn and maybe not even Stralman but they have Cal Foote coming and a very nice Top 4 still intact.

John Cooper wouldn't tolerate the way Gus plays D for more than a few minutes before turning the lights go out on that situation permanently.

Sikura does something most Hawk forwards won't or can't. That is play a strong game without the puck. He's almost always in good defensive position. He ensures he's between his net and the puck when the Hawks aren't is possession. He doesn't cheat for scoring opportunities. And yet he gets lots of chances offensively because he plays the right way. Forget about the fact he didn't score look at what he does right and the fact he had lots of scoring chances, he is patient with the puck and never overplayed the puck even though he hadn't scored. Sikura will help the team.

Defense is imperative to a strong team and the only way the Hawks will contend again. I'm curious if Coliton can implement a defensive system and make the players adhere to it. Defence is hard work and commitment, enforcing team defense will tell us who wants to play in Chicago and who doesn't.

Working out in Chicago is a great thing especially for team chemistry and will allow the team to also do unofficial on ice workouts and team get togethers.

I agree that he's a hard worker willing to battle in corners ETC....He'll be great on the 3rd or 4th line.

I've come around to that thinking whereas before I thought he needed to be top-9 or maybe even top-6 to find his niche in the NHL. After watching him play a solid and relentless 2-way game I've changed my mind and think maybe he would work very well on the 4th line with other defensively minded line mates and would bring some offense to the 4th line that otherwise may be in short supply. I could see Caggiula and him with Kampf being a line that although isn't a big prototypical 4th line could be effective in being that line that checks the opponent very well.

You really think so? Last time he was coaching these guys he was near the bottom of the league. Well, maybe you are correct if all he wants to do is cash his checks, play on the ice for a few months, find the next Binny's down there in Florida, and ham it up with old friends. Winning games my not be high on the list.

I agree. Definitely a good sign. The Hawks forward core wasn't the greatest at helping the D out. Some of their best games were when forwards did the little things on the backcheck and helped disrupt plays, but many of the breakdowns defensively involved forwards losing their guy who became open for a prime scoring chance.

I wouldn't hold my breath about any of the Hawks core suddenly jumping ship to Florida. These guys have played for the Hawks for years and none of them have contracts that are simple to trade. Odds are high that none of the big $ players are going anywhere.
