Thanks Todd. It's the eye test for me that says 3rd liner. Hopefully he finds a way to elevate his game to that of a true 2nd liner, but preliminary indications aren't promising.

This year, Zacha's scored 12 goals in 60 games. That, to me, is a step forward.

Also, last year, he was enjoying a strong forechecking line playing with Maroon. This year, his linemates weren't the same. Smaller, more skilled, but smaller. I'd like to see him stuck with another grinder and make a good cycle-possession line so that he can actually play the shut down role. I'd like to see the Devils get a decent power forward winger to play with him.

Thoughts on McLeod, Todd? I know we’ve established his ceiling probably isn’t that high but he’s looked pretty good the last few games. Some nice rushes and picking up a few points.

Thi is why I dont like analitics.

he literally scored 12 pts in 17 games. Why would you second guess it? He is obviously capable of it because he did it.

If we trust analytics to tell us when a player is underperforming bc of bad luck, we can't just disregard them when they are inconvenient.

Exactly. Sometimes players get extremely lucky over a stretch of time and their performance regresses to the mean. That's how you get the David Clarksons of the world who get massively overpaid.

Can't say I'm surprised pav is not a big producer (I am however a fan)..his draft season was extremely underwhelming and it has unfortunately followed him to the pros. He's never put up the big numbers (like say Barzal, the pick nj should have made) not even ppg so its highly unlikely he will do it in toughest league in world

Would you rather have:

Pavel Zacha: Smoke & Mirrors
OR
Ryan Malone: Coke & Mirrors

My memory might be getting bad, but I seem to recall hearing Pavel Zacha wasn't playing badly and he should be getting some breaks and stop being so snake bit.

I mean WTF? When he doesn't produce everyone should chill out because his underlying numbers say he isn't garbage; but when he starts racking up points it's just bullpucky because his underlying numbers didn't improve?

You know what (frank) underlying numbers and go back to the eye test. This guy can play some decent hockey, flashes some skills and isn't really anything special overall.

In other words, Crusher 68 is spot on:

PAVEL ZACHA IS A THIRD LINER.

Nobody's who's watched him at any point in the last 3 seasons is surprised....

you think players with multi year deals wanna lose to secure top talent since they will be here or are they gonna play best game of season when it behooves them not to?

If the game against Carolina is any indication, they will come out playing hard.

I’d like to trade him frankly, even if it is for another team’s reclamation project.

Seeing this team try to win without any shutdown whatsoever would be entertaining for the first 25 games until the defense settled into the season and then NJ would proceed to start tanking again losing every game 5-2 and watching people complain they aren't scoring enough, blaming even rating defensemen, and protecting -25 rating defensemen saying "their even rating teammates are lousy" until we start hearing the tank motto of the year ("Etre en derriere pour Lafreniere") ("Finis derniere pour Lafreniere')

Guys, Im so stoned now and because of that have the best idea for hockey that'll change the sport!

The NHL releases the schedule for every team like they nornally do. But every team is allowed say 2-3 challenges a year. There will be rules for this but this is the concept. With those challenges a team could choose to play another team at their own choosing. So LA could challene san jose say on the second half of back to back, maybe when their best player got injured.

This could so much straetgy to the game and would inject so much excitment.

What do you think?!
