So Helly has faced more shots than any other NHL goalie. Comrie has faced more shots than any other AHL goalie. Is it possible we have a problem with the defensive system we are not only teaching our pros but also our AHL’ers for when they get called up? Jets coaches and management, what are we fans missing with this strategy?

Petan is destined for an AHL career, or even lower (KHL), UNLESS, he gets a break and gets traded to or picked up by a team with very little forward depth. Getting traded to Toronto was not a good thing for Petan.
- bennythehat

The KHL is a higher level league...
Either way, he’ll get a shot somewhere next year, for sure. Dubas might be approaching “take away the favourite toys” stage with Babcock, so Petan might not be dead in TOR just yet.

Even if Dubas had a better hockey mind than Babcock your statement totally ignores that it was Shanahan who hired Babcock. Dubas is a lame duck GM in a broken organization. The current success they are having is lipstick on a pig.

Bingo! Dubas is the shiny new GM toy. I think we all know who will be pulling the strings in TO for awhile.

Boys - was at game last night - let's chalk that up to a nice hard fought win

Yes, we can pick apart parts of the game - go right ahead

I had to laugh, after complaining about Kuli not laying down to block game winning pass v San Jose, his first shift out he awkwardly fell to his knees to block a shot ... learning is good

Saturday my last reg season tix ... I'm gonna weigh in after

1 pt lead in Central w 2 games in hand !

He was rolling almost a point per game before Desjardins was hired. He’s still gonna finish the season at a 50~ point pace on a horrific team in his first season back. As a 36 year old, it’s important to note.

Like, seriously dude. What a weak argument. That’s like me saying Gretzky wasn’t even good because 2016 Alumni game

Nice one Benny. From a KHL star to an NHL goat. I'm sure he'll blame it on LAK coaching or something.

Edit: I see he already did....lol

Take a look at the 2013 draft year. Picks 31 to 62, second round, only 23 have played in the NHL. 13 of the 23 have less than 100 games. There are six of that group that have played more NHL games than Petans 111 games.

So, the real question is: did the 2nd round in the 2013 NHL draft live up to the hype?

Remember this was the year of McKinnon 1, Domi 12, Morrisey at 13, Dano at 27, Petan 43.

It was a good draft year for the AHL in my opinion. Petan, Dano (first round) and the rest of the second round all look very average in my opinion. The later part of the first round and the second round look very average, I don’t think the hockey minds missed anything with tons of new average draft picks coming up. Easily replaceable, which has happened. If you want to go the cynical route, a whole lot of the "later first round" and the second round 2013 all got screwed by their coaches. You know, deployment issues, favoritism, all those meaningless arguments that support sour grapes when you are AHL caliber.

Another tidbit here, same draft year, Andrew Copp at 4th round 104, 281 games. Heck of a lot more NHL games than Mr Petan and Mr Dano. Perhaps Copp provided the team something that Dano and Petan could not provide? Good drafting by Jets scouts on Copp. Maybe plus 52 over the course of 281 games says something about his reliability?

I love how little you guys understand about players. He’s 36 years old, playing in what is essentially a trap system.

You guys... just google

I hope it's a Toronto - Winnipeg final and Petan gets to play.
I don't know what will happen to Rexpoo then. Will he be actively cheering on Petan as he hopefully piles up the points beating the Jets just to prove he was right or will he have his fingers crossed that the rest of us are right and Petan does nothing .

Some Laine thoughts:

did he take it personally and as an insult that he was on the '2nd' line? In a recent interview he said something like 'now i'm playing against the best so i have to be my best all the time' (that could be a really gross mis-quote) as though 2nd line was for second tier players.

he is playing with more confidence and from before the boston game this was evident

still not moving his feet, very static on PP, on any board work, and in d-zone. When he adds some purposeful motion to finding and creating passing lanes on the PP the goals will return.

Wheeler and Sheif are proving they can carry most of the load and let Laine be Laine.

It was pure relief to see Copp out with Wheeler and Sheiffle for the last 2 minutes of play.

Trap teams do get power plays.
Kovie has a whopping 9 points on the power play.
I googled that.

Another thing of note is that Maurice trusts the Kulikov/Myers pairing more than Trouba/ Chariot in the dying minutes and against the top lines the last few games. That all being said I thought Trouba had a good overall game last night and deserved that goal after working hard to make it a 3 on 2 rush. I'll try and forget the gaffe a few minutes before that where he almost handed the game away.

You don't even need to google that 30 pts in 60 games extrapolates to only 36 pts with LAK having 12 games left.

Just some comments about your comments.

Maybe he did, but English is not his first language either,.... so the meaning could be "I am playing against the best so I need to show up"

I would agree about the second bolded point. His last 12 games or so have been remarkably better than that stretch of what 20 games from December to mid Feb? I will give him credit as his "compete level" increased dramatically soon after getting put on Scheif Wheeler line. Even so, there are elements that you just cringe. The previous game SJ game where he took a feeble attempt to cross check a SJ player was quite feeble. However, having said this, he is skating now and competing a lot harder. And, BTW, I completely disagree with Petes last post about saying the one thing Laine was missing in his game was "passing game" and now that his passing has started to shine, all is well for Winnipeg favourite controversy.

Sorry Pete, but that post a big crock of you know what. He was lacking compete, effort, focus or just plain give a damn for about 20 games. You call out Maurice on every other post but give Laine a pass. Can he pass, Yep, check, can he score, Yep, check. As long as he can play the was he has in these last 12 games or so, he is not a liability to the extent he was for that period of 20 games of hockey oblivion.

You must admit, Laine has picked it up with Wheels and Scheif. Maybe he was po'd being on Littles wing, but there is whole lot more expectations of the #1 line. I will give him credit for turning his game around. Are there parts of his game to work on for improving, Yes! But, I will take this Laine over Dec/Jan/Feb Laine.

Finally on Copp. Plus minus means nothing huh? All the stats board still post them. NHL lifetime plus 52 for Copp, I would have no problem putting him on the ice in the dying minutes / seconds of the game.
