The deterrence topic is exactly the same as the "Botterill made all the good moves" topic...

You can't prove anything in any way.

You can't prove someone deters something if it never happens. All you can do is female dog when any single occurrence happens that Gudbranson didn't prevent.

saying Gudbranson was brought in to protect players but didn't deter Werenski from hitting Guentzel is like female doging that we traded for Kessel for scoring but female dog about every game he doesn't score.

Botterill was he cap genius who let the 5 defenseman fiasco happen, but he's a genius and GMJR is incompetent. And you don't know who was the main driver for individual trades/roster moves.

Point is you can't say anything definitively on these topics.

I will say, after the empty net goal I fully expected Blue Jackets to pull some dirty poop. Down 3-0, on the verge of missing the playoffs, get to play Pit again in 2 days... Gudbranson was put on the ice and nothing happened.

Did he deter something? Maybe, maybe not. We don't truly know.

Will he stop every dirty play from ever occurring? No.

What are you talking about? Someone else says they wish someone ended Cookes career and Im classless for just mentioning it occurred prior to the head check rule?? Ok...

Cooke was a great player for the Penguins.

- MacPatty

Late hit. Lead with elbow outstretched specifically to target head. Intent was very clearly to injure. The legality of it doesn’t even matter at that point, the play was dirty. If knee to knees were technically legal would you just be totally fine with a guy like Tom Wilson hunting knees? These are things that end careers and do nothing a regular check can’t acomplish.

And yeah, calling a guy who played the game with the same mind set as Raffi Torres a great Penguin is pretty classless.

JR basically admitted he was the reason for the 5 D fiasco. He knew he was taking that risk and it blew up in his face.

Other than that, I agree with you. Two things I'll say for certain, Cbus was far less physical last night than they were in the previous game. And, Gudbranson smoked Jenner last night as he was trying to crash the net. I'm not sure I've ever seen Jenner laying on his ass while playing the Penguins.

And then Jenner took a really blatant high stick to Crosby's face.

Deterant unsuccessful.

I never said he was a deterant. All I said is Jenner was crushed trying to crash the net and it was wonderful.

That's pretty dramatic. I thought it was a good hit on Savard, there were no rules against targeting the head back then.

So what about the hit that actually ended his career by Huntwick. Late, picked his head and slammed it off of the glass. Was it less dirty because it wasn't open ice? Don't hear anyone e calling for his career to be ended...

Dude, just give it up. Change the subject. You’re only drawing out this dumb argument.

Off topic but Columbus is actually a pretty nice city! Definitely had the impression it wasn’t as nice as it is!

From being at the game last night a couple things were very noticeable not sure how it all looked on tv....

Bjustad looked to be everywhere all the time. I’d say he looked to be the best forward on the ice. In warm ups he was taking shots from the left dot and he’s got a laser of a shot.

Maybe I picked the right games to come to but Gudbranson looked really good. Definitely the most noticeable d man all night. Lots were saying wait till a fast team comes at him he will be horrible. They did quite a bit and I don’t think he got beat wide off the rush for one solid chance all night.

I mentioned it 2 blogs ago but watching the puck support difference between the penguins compared to the jackets was VERY noticeable. It’s been clear the past couple games the dmen all have 2 or more options to get the puck to to clear the zone.

I mentioned that earlier. He’s at full Aussie level stubborn. We could all argue till the cows come home about objective subjects, but this is all stemming from a question he raised and a factual answer given, but he refused to accept it.

Zero point zero.

I’m not sure he’s dumb so much that he’s dug himself into such a hole of wrong that he’s making any kind of argument he can to not concede.

But yeah, he could also be dumb.

Like it or not the Cooke to savard hit at that time wasnt considered a big deal. Beyond a possible elbow it was.par.for the course in the nhl. There were many many many hits like this that caused serious injury that were applauded by many fans and hockey ppl(cherry). For better it has changed..not enough honestly. No one will.defend Cooke in the context of what we know now...but to rewrite history like you all are is a joke. most of the hockey world said keep.your head on a swivel or keep.your head up for eons. To suggest otherwise is a joke. Please stop bullying ppl in this thread. Makes it horrid.

Seems RW must have mentioned the deterrent thing in his blog... (I don’t read them anymore) I’m not for or against the deterrent argument but got a different view last night between the whistles 3 times Gudbranson was pretty “active” to say the least... there was a ton of stick work being done in the first half of that game in the play and behind it. Between the whistles Anderson was chirping what looked to be hornqvist and Gudbranson skated up and crossed checked him twice in the ribs what looked to be very hard. It was bad enough that the lineman stepped in and Anderson was bent over on the bench after and the trainer came and talked to him. Whether that stops anything else later in the game who knows but it stopped that little scrum very fast. Jenner caught a solid slash from Gudbranson over the wrist when he was “talking” with Sid near the start of the 2nd. Anyone that’s played any hockey knows the areas where it seemed Gudbranson was “targeting” there isn’t much padding there. Not saying he needs to fight 3 times a game or even once but watching those 2 events he ended the chirp fest pretty quickly.

My buddy that I was at the game with is a scout and he said he thinks “it’s pretty f’ing clear sid or malkin have a ton of say in having a tough guy in the lineup.” I said well the gm and coach should decide the best roster to have on the ice no? He laughed and said “ya go be a coach or gm and don’t listen to anything your superstars say or want and see how long you make it man. See how they respond to playing for you. Bet the owners can your a$$ before sid or malkins! Trust me in saying there is zero chance old school Rutherford would have apparently realized reaves didn’t work and then tried 2 other fighters it doesn’t make sense. Vegas wanted reaves only and if it was his decision to get rid of the toughest guy in the show because it wasn’t working he wouldn’t have brought 2 more in if there wasn’t someone in his ear.”

Definitely gave me a different view of the situation.

Murray said he seemed to have an invisible force field around him...like no one wanted anything to do with him.

Like it or not...players are on this team because sid or geno do want them there...JJ is on this team because sid wanted him...i have no doubt about that...ppl can whine and cry about it..but if it makes sid happy(we have seen unhappy sid with johnston), it's worth it. This team wont do squat without content superstars.

I like fighting and violence in hockey. I could give one shred of a poop if a guy deters anything. If someone hurts a player on my team i want the guy that will hurt the other team. The cycle continues forever and pisses snowflake hockey fans off.

I've noticed Bjugstad too. What a solid trade. We got rid of 2 guys who were older that couldn't play in our system for 2 guys who are doing quite well. I'm happy with the direction of the team.
