No Bob? Thought they might go with Kincaid. He’s beaten the Pens. Take two, end Tort’s misery. |

#GritBoners do not help Malkin. You almost made it an entire blog without a JJ shot. |

I dislike the Blue Jackets on nearly the same level as I do the Flyers. I would love for the Pens to hammer them both games and see them miss the playoffs.
Prediction: Johnson plays shut down on Panarin and scores the game winner. Torts cries (pretty much a given). |

Is the stat with Malkin having a point on 90% of ES goals when he is on the ice really a valuable metric? On one hand it would tell you he is in control of the offence when he is on the ice...
But really, he only has 12 even strength goals so far this year and his line has been getting scored against a lot more than they have been scoring. Is he trying to make a point that Malkin is awesome and his linemates suck? |

If there was ever a time for a JMFJ revenge game, this'd be it. |

Is there going to be a Gudbranson public apology is he continues to play well? JJ hasn't been bad either. Seems like he may have turned a corner. Dark times for Ryan Wilson.... |

It points out that Malkin isn't getting a ton of help. I don't think Malkin's overall play has been dominant enough to warrant having a hand in 90% of all ES scoring when he's on the ice given that he's usually in 80% range and the average for forwards is 70%. That 90% in the context that Malkin is having a fairly average season by his standards indicates that others on the ice aren't doing their fair share. Makes sense given that his left wings haven't been impressive all season and that he's been saddled with some pretty poopty blue line pairings.
And before you start with the Phil stuff since I know you like beating that drum, Phil's sitting comfortably where an elite player should be in IPP at 82.2%. Basically that second line is Malkin and Kessel willing stuff into the net. |

I've been openly acknowledging Gudbranson has been effective so far and hope it keeps up. Johnson has gone from a sub replacement level to a replacement level player since being put back on his natural side, so while he's improved, I don't think it deserves accolades, especially in the context that he's with Justin Schultz and should be experiencing a play bump because of quality of line mate. |

No, I wasn't going to go there, just haven't really heard that stat talked about much and really not sure the true value of it independently. There are players who can be very valuable contributors to a line without racking up the points. |

Of course. There are the Hagelins of the world who's bulk of points registered every season are the 20 something secondary points they get as a result of hard forechecking, but its tough for a line to be consistently effective at even strength when its two elite guys, a pigeon, and two blue liners that aren't helping at all. For the most part, that's what we've seen regarding the second line this season. The point here isn't to say that Malkin and Kessel are playing out of this world hockey, its to say that they really do deserve slack when they go through slumps by their standards given that they're the ones doing absolutely everything, especially Evgeni Malkin. |

This is why we needed to keep Jussi Jokenin. |

Agreed here. I've been cautiously optimistic about Gudbranson so far. In the three games he's played the Pens haven't really faced teams that have an abundance of speed or very aggressive styles. I remain hopeful, but the next four games will be very telling IMO. |
