Who would have thunk it? The Hawks are in the thick of the 2019 NHL Playoff race.

Well, this sure complications things in terms of what Bowman does from now until 3 pm on Monday, doesn't it?

In anticipation of this year's deadline, I wanted to compile a mailbag blog where I answer questions, comments and concerns about the trade deadline and future of this team.

Without further ado, here we go…

Blackhawks should be buyers

they could go to the finals in that weak conference, their offense is almost unstoppable

They would still lose by a field goal.

Curious--in the current playoff format, has any team that is last in the league in goals allowed made the playoffs?

Friedman:

Not a big surprise considering what happened last night, but, word is OTT put Mark Stone on the market after the game in NJ. Ryan Dzingel also became available yesterday.

The Hawks have to add now.
Im thinking last hour of the deadline , a “Johnny Oduya” type that no one is really talking about for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Maybe aomeone like that with some term left .
Yall know how I LOVE Tom Wilson, I also like, not love, adding someone like McQuaid from the NYR.

First of all, thanks TC for the mailbag blog. Great add to what you do here already.

Mr. P, gotta disagree on giving up picks. Would love a JO type, but for me anything Stan does should be focused on keeping and if anything, adding picks.

If Stan adds, should be a hockey trade and only for Yutes...no aging vets!!!

* Slater Koekkoek – I have liked his game but you can't bring back the exact same defence and pretend things will be different. Depending on how things shake out, I would resign him to a 1-year "show me" deal for 800k-900k.

This isn’t the first time you’ve made a comment like this regarding Koekkoek. I would argue that since he just got here, that Koekkoek shouldn’t be thought of as being part of the “same defense”, he is part of the change. While there’s no need to sign him to a big contract just yet, I think he looks promising so far, and would like to see more of him.

I agree, i hope Bowman signs him to a 2 year contract, kind of like Gus, if he does get better you get to have him for another year at a very cap friendly deal. If not, i mean he was able to trade Manning for an actual hockey player

Same, and was thinking TC's offer was very team friendly but like BTD mentions, probably more a Gus type deal...2 years at $1.2M/year.

Think someone else posted that Colliton seems to be liking him more too as he saw around 20 mins of ice time vs DET.

Caligula was for Manning, Koekkoek was the result of trading Rutta.

Is he liking Koekoeck more and more, or Dahlstrom less and less?

These are two winnable games but games that will truly show us if we belong in the top 8 in the west. Have to think you will need 3-4 of a possible 4 to be in a good spot.

I do not remember us ever having this much cap space at the TDL. I have no problem with Stan adding expiring contracts to give the team some depth for the playoffs. I would not give up our 1st round pick or any of our top 5 prospects however.
We can also help a team which needs cap space at the TDL by taking a large expiring contract off their hands for assets (the way they did to us in the past). I hope Bowman uses this opportunity and does not let all this cap space slide past the TDL.
Lastly, I think that we owe it to Kane and Toews with the year that they have had to not sit on our hands through Monday's TDL.

I don't think we can fully assess guys like KK, Drake, Strome and even Perlini and any other newly acquired players until sometime next season. They all need time to grow and improve their respective games and need the remainder of this season and a training camp to get there.

While many get on Perlini, and rightly so because of his effort, I'm reluctant for the team to give up on a 22 year old who has some seriously good skills. If he doesn't have the hockey sense to be a top 6 player teach him to defend to put that skating ability to good use to be a shutdown penalty kill guy. Being a good defensive forward is about effort and learning and maintaining positioning. There are posters clamouring for the Hawks to pick up Kadri who was similar to Pirlini in that in his younger years he didn't prove his worth to the Leafs until Babcock got him to buy into a specific role. And while Perlini may prove to be a complete bust I much prefer to see the Hawks have a young project player than a veteran who doesn't provide anything long or short term.

I remember JJ being a big Wennberg fan. What happened to him? He's really fell off since that big contract but perhaps it's the coaching style?

Keep in mind JJ also predicted ADB was a small weakling and wouldn't amount to anything in the NHL.

Next two games could be factors. If Hawks lose to CO and Minny and then are headed to West Coast for 3 tough road games Stan could be much more aggressive moving parts. If they beat CO and Minny he might be reluctant to move a Kruger or a Dman.

I don't see Stan making a significant move. Maybe minor moves (Kunitz, Kruger, Forsling, Forsberg) acquiring mid round picks or b level prospects. It would be a coup if he could move AA and retain $2 mil in salary. But really I think AA is underappreciated. I think he is contributing, but if we could move him and free up cap space that allows us to add a stud defender in the Summer I would be ok with that.

Ok but back to Wennberg. Would CBJ do AA for Wennberg? Seems like another Strome type and just needs a change of scenery but jmo

Agree and am thinking of how Q got Frolik to buy into a bottom 6 PK specialist role and how well that turned out.

The difference here being at least as a Hawk I don't recall Fro ever lacking for effort but there was a spell where he couldn't seem to have scored in a cathouse with a shoebox full of fifties.

I digress, but that would be great and it's why I would bring him back too.
