Matt Duchene has played exactly 1 full season. Last year. He's misssed games(s) everyother year.

Teams can only retain salary on up to two players contracts simultaneously.

To make roster space on their back line for Lindgren if NHL ready for good next season, & especially so should either Claesson or McQuaid be ultimately re-signed at some point later on, the Rangers must try to trade one of either Smith's or Shatty's contracts (each 2 years left), by either the deadline on Monday, or after the season and preferably prior to the start of free agency on July 1st.

The only way they can likely move either high contract is by retaining up to 50% of their remaining money starting next season. If not, Smith could be bought out, but would cost them slightly over $2M greater in total cap space over the 4 year buyout term, versus trading him in retaining 50% of his two years $8.7M total due him after this season. Shatty's buyout would be a cap killer, but no greater so than in the 2020/21 season alone when it would cost the Rangers near $6.1M in cap hit charges.

Yea so far though they only want to go a short term higher AAV type of deal, and Boras wants long term.

Until they are willing to go big, not sure how serious they are
