What counts is a "retained salary transaction", the emphasis on "transaction". The Rangers made a trade where they retained salary. Whatever his new team did with him is irrelevant.

I don’t even want him for all the pts as much as I do for leadership. They have zero captain personnel on this roster and Hank is done soon enough also (he’s basically the leader right now). The guy is a bonafide elite leader, and great player to boot

Sign EK for 7 yrs immeadiately make him the captain, ala messier back n the day, and start the contending process.
