It was more of a cross-check to his lower-spine, a slash across both wrists and then a donkey punch for dessert. If they played with no helmets and had razor-blades on their sticks, this is a terrible and vicious reaction.

As it stands, they wear helmets and visors, it was a heat of the moment reaction and in a sport where guys constantly slash you and cross-check you because you have more skill than them, I'm surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.

He didn't make contact. IMO, what was done to him was much worse. You ever take a cross-check to the lower spine? It happens ALL THE TIME in this league and doesn't even get called half the time but it's one of the most dangerous and painful things you can do to your opponent. Not to mention getting both your wrists slashed right afterward?

Let's all go home because there's nothing here to dwell on. Malkin missed him with his stick. No harm, no foul. There was no intent on Malkin's end, just a reaction.

Yes, I have, they also wear padded, hard plastic protectors there that go halfway up their back. I've also been rabbit punched and never felt the need to whip my stick in a huge arc trying to hit someone in the head.

To say there's no intent is absurd. I agree it was a "crime of passion", in the moment, and not premeditated, but that doesn't absolve him.

What he did was on par with what Duncan Keith did, and one of the Jets? recently that earned both a suspension. Keith's being quite stiff. Granted those 6 games were basically rest before the playoffs.

He has a phone hearing, max 5 games. He deserves a couple. He tried hard to make it look unintentional, it was.

Tell him see ya on July 1st. If he really wants to be here I’m sure he’ll understand why adding assets for the long term is beneficial to the franchise. He can get some playoff experience. If he decides to go elsewhere then we have enough dough to throw at Stone and Duchene.
- Pegullaville

Stone > Skinner
But the goal should be to get BOTH

We shouldn’t trade for Stone unless we are pretty sure he will sign
Risking the assets it would cost to get him is a bad idea

Go after him as a UFA-
hope Botts is a great salesman

Are you saying you thought it was unintentional? Or did you just forget the "n't" at the end of "was"?

I don't think you can whip your stick around like that and have it be nothing other than intentional. Both Keith and Johansen, I knew a Jets player was involved. were suspended. Malkin's was worse than Johansen's:

But not as bad as Keith's(there was definitely some premeditation there):

All Malkin had to do was swing his elbow like a normal hockey player, or skate over and start throwing down. You can't have guys whipping their sticks around like that.

I'm fine with one or two, would like to see more. I think these plays are just as dangerous as bad boarding penalties. At least with boarding there's a split second to brace. There's no bracing when the first thing that happens is a stick in your chops, or throat, or eye.

It was intentional. Reckless enough to deserve a couple game.

I do wonder what the ask would be on a player like Parayko. Would Ghule, Nylander and a pick do it? He seems like a perfect target when you take his age and contract into consideration.

Edit; we would need to move some salary out to make it work so it may make sense to do a deal like this after the season ends

Why would a playoff team trade one of their better and younger defenseman?

Only time he’s had over 20
He is MUCH more of a playmaker

Just bc he’s good, doesn’t automatically mean he’s a good fit

- jdfitz77

The minute Reino gets paired with Eichel his and Jack’s numbers go up. His game speaks for itself.

He’s had 20+ 2X in his career BTW.

Nylander + Dougherty/Borgen
for
Josh Manson (or Montour if they’d move him)

*not a rumor
Just throwing it out there

Going forward...
Dahlin-Manson
Pilut-Risto
McCabe- Bogo (eventually Laaksonen)

- jdfitz77

No thanks. Dunno what Manson has done to get that type of package in return?

Borgen could be our 2nd best RHD as early as next season.

20 goals doesn’t make u a “scorer” if ya know what i mean?
All these guys have the ability to score
That doesn’t change their propensity to be
PASS FIRST type players

I like Huberdeau
He’s a good player
But we have to take into account the Cap
And with that in mind,
we need another “Skinner” type player who finishes more than we need another “set up” type

Try a sloppy joe!
You’ll feel better

In all seriousness...
it’s not like I’m saying Huberdeau is bad

You’re massively overstating my point
We don’t “only need elite goal scorers”
But we have 4 legit top6 forwards
Eichel- playmaker
Skinner- scorer
Sam- playmaker
Mitts- playmaker

Adding another playmaker in Huberdeau is fine
BUT
do we have Cap Room to add the scorers we need for those playmakers
AND
replace our only decent RH defenseman?

Not really

- jdfitz77

Mitts isn’t a legit top 6 forward, yet. He could be one day but right now he’s not.

Manson has played well as a top pair defense partner for Lindholm
Solid, stay at home, physical type who could be an ideal partner for Dahlin

Borgen could also be in Rochester next year or never turn out to be more than a 3rd pair guy
But that’s why i put Dougherty as well
Trade him instead of Borgen if u want
He’s more NHL ready anyways, so the Ducks could prefer him

Fair, but i think we all still believe he will be
I was just projecting the roster moving forward, and the types of players & their roles we’d potentially have them in

The post u quoted was me talking about Huberdeau

I figured u were bringing up Reinhart to say that he’s a “scorer” bc the context of that line of convo was how we have a bunch of playmaker types (Sam incl) and don’t need to add another (Huberdeau)

Manson may be paired with Lindholm but that doesn’t mean much. Bogosian is paired with Dahlin and Bogosian is definitely no top pair D. He may have played well to but that still shouldn’t cost us our best prospect + one of our top D prospects. Makes no sense. We shouldn’t be in the business of just giving away prospects for a minor improvements. We did that once and it added years to our rebuild.

Manson is MUCH better than Bogo,
and (IMO) a perfect fit as Dahlin’s future defense partner
That’s why I’d target him
Also... bc hes a “defensive” defenseman, he’ll never cost us a whole lot on the Cap

And Nylander’s status as a good prospect is fading
But if Botts still believes in him, then u keep Nylander and sub in another prospect (Olofsson? Asplund? etc etc)
Moving him would fall under the assumption that we don’t think he’s gonna be a legit Top6 guy

Nylander is also a “playmaker”
Not quite the goal scoring winger type we need to add
So idk if he even fits all that well going forward with us?

And if he isn’t a “fit”
Then we should absolutely explore trading him while he still has some value

might make contributions that might help them win

I think we'd both agree that JB has been risk averse during his seasons so far. His bold moves coming during the off-season. Sitting a respected vet is a bold move.

Lindy would have glued Skinner to the bench at times this year. He had no problem doing that. It's just not what Phil/JB do.

- Lunaion

This is all true. But our little chat here started when you said it’s “pure fiction” for the article to suggest Botterill is over reliant on vets instead of giving the kids a chance.
