meaning Stone would instantly become their bona fide top right winger.
Stone would play on the 2nd line with Tkachuk & Backlund. Tkachuk is one of the better playmakers on the team and needs a guy to feed the puck to--Lindholm has pretty much cemented himself on that top line.

Hands off our young D! Brodie would be a good veteran presence (Ontario boy) and at 28 he still has prime years left. Also, shouldn't be too hard to lock him up long term at a reasonable cap hit. Frolik gives Ottawa another capable vet who can chew up tough minutes---also shouldn't be too hard to lock him up long term. |

Aren’t contracts pro-rated in terms of the cap? I think Winnepeg or Nashville’s cap space should be enough since Stone has less than half of his 7ish million that would count against the cap. |
|

Zero chance that return from the Flames gets both those guys. That’s not even a great package for just Stone.
Edit.....I mean the offer from the first post in the comments, not Trevor’s blog. For some reason the quote isn’t working. |

Batherson is playing lights out in Belleville. Logan Brown and Wolanin are also playing really well.
There is an upside (theoretical) in avoiding giving Stone and Duchene 8 year deals.
We are getting to the point where there are not a lot of teams that can easily absorb another max deal on their 2019-20 cap. They will need to shed contracts in order to sign their own players.
Having cap space and flexibility can drive opportunity. There will be some very good veteran players available at reasonable cost and willing to take short term deals.

I think Flyers could be a sleeper team for Stone. They have prospects and Stone's age makes him perfect to build with this team. The Flyers could also then move Voracek at the draft so signing Stone isn't a big deal for them.
Would Ottawa take 2019 1st, Gostisbehere, Issac Ratcliff for Stone? |

Ottawa has a good roster of young Dman with offensive upside. They have greater need for a physical Dman (a #2) that can be partnered with Chabot. |

Lets be honest here spat, the Sens need a bunch of everything, that said, you're right, they have an offensive defenseman in Chabot and a big winger in Tkachuk. Beyond that, there's not a lot there except good prospects, which they need more of.
The one saving grace this franchise might have, inspite of their owner, is their ability to draft well. If Stone and Duchene do leave, the franchise is right back to square one, almost. Like the were in 1992.

Brown has been playing very well of late. I wonder if he gets a call up soon ahead of batherson. He had a sweet goal last night in OT.
I wonder how inclined Melnyk will be to absorb contracts when he doens't have to though.

Someone needs to inform Trevor on how the Cap works. Winnipeg can currently take on a total of 26M in full cap hits to remain compliant. |

I think they are not far off in following an expansion type model, I think that has been the fall back position all through this past year.
They already have some really nice pieces. They should be able to pick up some good veteran players on short term deals. They need to give the young guys playing time to grow their games. They will really struggle next year but you will love to watch the young guys grow their game.
I think they start next year with a minimum of 5 rookies in their line up.
Formenton, Batherson, Brown, Chlapik and Wolanin should make some noise at training camp. I think Bernard-Docker may also be in the conversation.
There may be other rookies in play, if they take back a top prospect or two in dealing any of their existing players.

As a Jets fan I would gladly do a deal for Stone involving a 1st, Vesalainen and someone like Comrie or Nic Petan. Heck you can have em both |

What's the story with Nic Petan? He was really highly touted coming off of the World Jr, but haven't really heard anything about him recently. |

Probably a capable bottom 6 in the NHL but turns out prospects are more than a 7 game sample at an international tournament. He should have never really been "highly" touted. |

So another Curtis Lazar.....by all means include him in any package back to the Sens.
We can teach him how to smile infectiously and eat debris thrown on the ice. |

I think Petan is definitely still a capable NHL if given the right opportunity. He's unfortunately never found the right fit here as he was playing with grinders like Thorburn when he first cracked the lineup. I think he had a good shot at the start of this season but then the poor kid had his father pass away during training camp and by the time he rejoined the team guys like Lemieux and Appleton were already passing him on the depth chart. Even with the Jets likely having to get younger and cheaper in the bottom 6 next year with the cap crunch coming it's hard to see where he would fit in. Given a fresh start I could see him thriving as a middle 6 forward with the right team/opportunity. Good offensive upside still and a really under rated playmaker |

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but there is way too much "bust risk" there for Ottawa for him to be considered a "key piece" in any deal for Stone or Duchene.
if he's the 3rd or maybe 4th asset included, fine......but there need to be at least 2 assets that are clearly better than him. |

I think the Karlsson trade serves as something of a model. The Sens are clearly interested in organizational depth and long term return. In the end, the Sens got 3 roster players (playing right now in Ottawa) plus Norris who was a first round pick and one more 1st round pick guaranteed and a 2nd round pick that can be a first if San Jose makes the Cup final.
You won't get as much for Stone or Duchene. But it will likely follow the same template where they want the pick, prospect and roster player.
Draft pick should be a mid first rounder along with a Norris type prospect.
If they get Tierney, Demelo and Balcer as roster type assets back they should be fine.
It will be sad to see these guys go...but, so far, Dorion is doing better than most of the critics make out.

Ya it's a bit confusing b/c Cap Friendly has projected cap and current cap, so I was basing it off of the projected one. Updated the blog at the top. |
