Peter Tessier: It's time...to take aim at Paul Maurice The Jets believe in the right things but that does not make them happen so is it time more criticism or existing criticism to be aimed squarely at Paul Maurice?

Old Mo might be on the way out with Randy Carlyle now available to the Jets.

My thoughts,
Yes absolutely the lines need to be mixed up, but not solely because of Laine!! This whole movement on twitter that the jets are screwing up Laine is a joke. He is only 20 and needs to learn not everything will be handed to him and sometimes when he is playing like crap, it’s his fault and not his center’s or his power play time .

Morrow is pure garbage and him in the line up over Niku is a joke

This is for the non anylitics folks.
When you read, a. his underlying numbers are great or b. He has no puck luck. this means he produces little to no points
When you read, he is experiencing puck luck, this means his underlying numbers are bad and the anylitics community is upset he is producing goals or points.

You forgot to mention Scheifele’s insane amount of ice time. He’s the only player on a top ten team, in the top 10 in minutes played.

Laine needs to watch a game or 2 from the press box, full stop. He’s 20 and part of development can be punitive!!!!
Without his shot he is borderline NHL player, at least based on his effort in other aspects of the game.
I like him, not overly worried, but needs to get his ass benched. If he’s not scoring goals he is one of the most useless forwards out there over the last 2 months.

The questions mount in other areas too in regards to roster, usage and tactics?

1. Why can Wheeler and Scheifele, the two best play drivers not be split apart?

They are one of the best 1-2 tandems in the game. Breaking them up is silly.

2. Nic Petan, his stats say he helps but he cannot crack the roster- what becomes of
him?

Petan is exactly 2 weeks away from being on another team. You can take that to the bank.

3. Laine, at some point does he need support with a better linemate, more suited to his strengths?

Laine's woes are Laine's fault. He is playing pretty terrible hockey while his two linemates Little and Roslovic are having very good seasons. Laine now leads the league in giveaways, many very costly. His stick is too long for gettting in close and working the boards and opposing players know to just get between him and the boards and steal the puck nearly every time. He most often attempts risky passes and tends to hold onto the puck a fraction of a second too long. Its growing pains. He still has a lot to learn but the faults in his play are his own. Putting line on the top line puts him up against the best lines in the NHL. That is not going to help his cause at all but rather just make things tougher.

4. The bottom six, with the return of Ehlers what happens there?

The return of Ehlers will provide some more space for Laine on that second line.

5. What kind of offence is Paul Maurice trying to run with this roster?

Maurice is doing a great job of developing solid chemistry by keeping the lines as intact as possible. It's the long game and will pay dividends come playoff time

6. Defence, it's an issue and when not 100% healthy the glaring holes are there with passing, coverage and more.

The Jets strangely played better defense when Buff wasn't in the lineup. I prefer Kulikov to Morrow. Myers now plays 20% of the game on the left side where he wasn't good at the beginning of the season but has been excellent on both sides ever since. I know a few of you knock Myers but he is easily the Jet's most versatile defenseman ( PP, PK, plays both sides, adds tons of offense, eats up big minutes). If we lose him it will be a big blow .

7. The stubbornness to adhere to the one way of doing things. Have the Jets been figured out?

No. Every team goes through some tough periods during the schedule. Its seems like this is our lull. I think they just stepped of the gas a little with such a big divisional lead. Trying to do a changeup such as the PP hasn't worked at all. The system that got us here is the one that works best. Don't change it because we lose a couple of games....that's how you will end up losing 10 in a row.

I've been thinking more about my beloved Mark Stone. The guy has so much heart. Do we really need Roslovic once Ehlers returns? A straight up trade of Roslovic for a rental in Stone might just be the ticket. Same could be said for Duchesne. If Roslovic seems to much to pay then Lemieux's , Appleton, or Copp might do.

I guess that Laviolette must be equally incompetent, because the Preds cannot catch the Jets in the standings (Losing 3-1 to ST.Louis as I type this).

Thoughts on this.
Wheeler and shief get outchanced and outplayed almost every game by the other teams best, they absolutely should be split up, if only to see how it looks, you can always go back but to not try is ridiculous

I’ve been hard on Myers and still do t want him re signed to anything more than a 2-3 year deal and 3.5-4milluon per. But I can admit he has been much better the last 20 games than he was the first 20

I’d never trade Roslovic for a rental!!! Never!!! Lemieux and Appleton are not in Roslovic’s league. One of Roslovic or Connor may be traded for an equal aged D in the summer to fill the gap left by Trouba and or Myers. To waste that chip now on rental is not smart.

Myers will be at minimum $5.5 MM, especially on a shorter term deal. I agree the 2-3 years is about right. Myers will likely want more term though.

I agree the price is steep with Roslovic. However we have Vesalainen in the wings and Ehlers and Little signed long-term. Laine likely not getting traded. So the top two lines are set. That leaves Roslovic on one of the grinder lines where he doesn't belong and Vesalainen should make the team next year. Roslovic is an RFA after next year and we won't be able to afford him once Laine and Connor are signed. To me it's becoming pretty clear that probably one of Perreault or Roslovic has to go at some point. To get a Stone or Duchesne is going to cost a 1st , a 4th , and a prospect. Would it not just be wiser to keep those picks and give up Roslovic or Perreault straight up ?

Huberdeau bigger and far more consistent with an extra year on term.
Preference is Huberdeau, a very quiet but substantial player

I rank them pretty equally. I prefer the lower salary on Trocheck over the extra year though. I like the players with tons of heart , tenancity, and leadership, over the ones who are quiet but might show slightly better Corsi stats.

Huberdeau quiet to us but is Assistant Captain and apparently good in the room.

Pete, ladies, gents, .....relax already. There are another 27 games left. No need to fire the coach and replace PoMo with Kitty Carlyle, not yet anyway.

And besides, Don Cherry has picked the Jets to win the cup.

The Jets are needing a jolt like an influx of energy from a strong player like Stoner or Duche, and get a big surge of energy just like last year with Stats. I was disappointed we wiffed on Muzzin but the capital has obviously been saved for hopefully a bigger prize like the the two I just mentioned.

The last two games ran into hot goalies and although last nites game was not the greatest, it was better than the Habs game.

LA was asking for Niku. Jets thought that price was too high. I don’t think we whiffed on anything.

I trade Vesalainen in a heartbeat if it means bringing in an impact player for this years cup run. Besides who is Vesalainen replacing? Laine, no; Ehlers, no; Wheeler, no; Connor, no; Roslovic, no. There is no room for Vesalainen on this roster going forward.

No, I’m not giving up Roslovic for a rental, and I don’t think Perreault is whatvottawa has in mind. Like I said, I agree we may need to trade Roslovic or someone else for a D in the summer. But absolutely not for a rental. Also. Connor, Vesalainen, and Ehlers are all LW. Roslovic is Right handed and still had Center potential where the other three do not. I’m not sure it will be Roslovic the one to go
