Todd Cordell: Sharks 5, Flames 2: Goaltending the difference in pivotal division game

Was at the game last night and Todd's comments are bang on about SJ2.
Kane and Hertl were beasts!
Hate to sound like a broken record but the Flames need to get some skilled size in their forward group if we are going to be able to compete with SJ, NASH, WPG in playoff hockey.

Ritt has been great but also has had some softies here and there, which until last night haven’t hurt us.

Flames goaltenders were clearly off but can we stop giving Jones so much credit?

The Flames on a regular night would've put away 8 last night And it wasn't because of Jones it didn't happen. It was because they flubbed 3-4 legitimate empty net opportunities. Jones was out of place for most and throwing rebounds into the slot like crazy. Not to mention the posts that were ripped (Lindholm's chance specifically) and the pile up of 3-4 sharks in the net.

I personally thought that was the best I've seen the Flames play this year. They had some defensive lapses against SJ L2 but overall dominated the game.

This effort happens in a series (with Rittich playing his regular self) and we're winning it guaranteed. Sharks aren't going to get 3 gimmes and Flames aren't missing 4 gimmes in a playoff game, let alone in the series entirely.

I think the main weakness and definitely most important acquisition at TD is a backup.

These guys need to pick their spots when it comes to playing the puck. The Burns goal I find hard to fault, as he made a great play, and without Ritter coming out, it was a clear cut breakaway. Bad call by Peters to pull him there. Couldn't fault Smitty on the first goal either, that was a slick tip with a lot of traffic in front.

Smitty just about gave away 2 goals because of his refusal to just stay in the cage.

Bennet tends to be the only one that has done that so far this year...which brings up Ferly as a target to acquire.....or maybe Gudas

Ferly will cost too much. I have been preaching Kassian but everyone thinks he's a mindless gorrila. But he wont cost that much, maybe Czarnik & he can do the brainless stuff like Kane & score some points as well. Case in point, look at the scoring summary of theOiler game last night. Hathaway/Ryan & Kassian could get a lot of stuff started up that can maybe change the tone of a game. Heck I would even try him with Bennett & Janko & move Neal down with Hathaway & Ryan. Just saying, Ferly will cost us our first & walk come July. Kassian is signed 1 more year & only $600K more than Czarnik & wont cost us our 1st.

Kassian has hurt the oil time and time again with his really bonehead penalty’s and defenceive laps. Plus he can’t stand the flames so don’t think his head would be into it. Maroon on the other hand tough hard hitting and a little more skilled then kassian.better fit, IM not sure what maroon is making right now. and the blues are playing excellent prob wouldn’t want to part with him.
