Honestly buying out Johnson's contract isn't all that bad. I'd only want Russell due to the fact that his contract is theoretically less burdensome to buy out, but I'm not entirely sure that's the case. There's one year where a Russell buy out would cost us $3.6 mil against the cap and that's really tough to swallow.

All the JJ trade idea/buyout talk is really depressing due to the fact that the Pens seem to think he’s good.

I almost wish we didn’t talk about it because it’s a constant reminder of the poor direction they have this team heading.

Nah they traded his a$$ then won the cup that year.

I looked at CapFriendly before making my post and thought Phaneuf for JJ. The GM of the Kings is a different person now. Blake might have a better understanding of defensemen. He also might like the big imposing defender (Phaneuf).

I think that we'd all take that trade, so it must be impossible.

I was wondering what kind of trade GMJR could do with the Oilers but without a GM, I doubt they made a defender trade. Too bad the didn't hold on to Chiarelli a bit longer.

Marc Staal for JJ? Not interested but you're looking for yuck for yuck.

Another possibility is trading him and eating half his salary. Less years of paying for him than a buy-out and you should get something back in that deal. Something.

Of course you'd do it. That trade so heavily favors the Pens that it would get vetoed by the league.

Any trade that involves JJ is bringing negative value. You just offset JJ with a 1st rounder and it essentially becomes Blueger for Parayko. Which is awful for STL.

You will all think I’m crazy, but if CHI decides to do a mini rebuild

To PIT: Duncan Keith
To CHI: JJ, 1st, Addison or Hallander

They save money and get decent futures.

Is this way out of bounds?

I wouldn't even want to do that, honestly. Keith right now is better than Johnson, but Keith is also not very good anymore and in a state of decline. I think the $5.5 mil contract is more burdensome than Johnson's.

Guys if I'm remembering correctly, didn't GMJR in his very fist press conference with Pens talk about bringing analytics/advanced stats into his decision making for the Pens?...and then not long after he hired a guy for his staff who was very highly regarded in the advanced stat world? Ventura or something like that was his last name?

If I am indeed remembering this all correctly...what the (frank) happened to all of that?

Well, in my opinion... Russel's contract would be easier to trade away completely, due to less term. If we legit did a 1 for 1 swap with nothing to almost nothing else thrown in... Russel would be easier to get away from.

He’s not nearly as good as he was, but I think Keith is still leaps and bounds better than JJ right now and creates offense.

The contract is terrible, but I think he boosts this team’s defense for this year and next.

Keith/Letang
Dumo/Schultz
Maatta/Pettersson

Profound difference IMO.

He doesn't care anymore.

In his first couple years he made a lot of moves that had sound analytic back bones. Sutter for Bonino, Perron for Hagelin, Bortuzzo for Cole, signing Eric Fehr, signing Matt Cullen the first time, trading for Justin Schultz. I may be missing a couple, but that;s pretty much all of his moves the first few years besides the Neal-Hornqvist trade which I think was a sound even swap that didn't really need the help of analytical analysis, the Kessel trade which was a no brainer, and the Depres for Lovejoy trade.

All of these fly in the face of numbers moves that have been going on are mostly post-Botteril moves. I think Bots was the progressive one in the office and managed to convince Rutherford that analytics are important. I think right now our FO is filled with with old school hockey guys that really don't give a damn about numbers so there's really no one in the room to voice that perspective.

My favorite chart is the zone exit/zone entry one. I think that’s really telling of how a player contributes.

Yeah stat Sam. He’s still employed by them. Depends on how much GMJR actually relies on him. Maybe Sam worked with Botts more than GMJR and Botts was better at manipulating Sams opinions so GMJR understood them.
