It was probably the golden number of 100 million that enticed McDavid. 100 million guaranteed dollars is hard to say no. |

To your point suggesting McDavid should've done what Matthews did, I disagree. It's quite clear that they just value different things in their contracts. Auston gets options while Connor gets security. One has guaranteed himself ~57mil and the chance to sign a new contract at age 26 while the other guaranteed himself 100mil and the chance to sign a new contract at age 29.
Injuries can happen to anyone at any time and can severely impact career earnings. |

Further, at age 29 another 8 year deal is still well within reason for a player of his calibre whereas an 8 year deal after Matthews' 5 years would bring him to 34 at which point his cap value MIGHT not be as high. I see it as follows:
ELC
12.5 x 8
16 x 8 (est.)
Age 37
ELC
11.63 x 5
15 x 8
13 x 3 (est.)
Age 37
Obviously this is a lot of conjecture, but it's not hard to imagine it going along these lines. |

I have what I think is an interesting question...
If the Pens were able to trade JJ, but it would be for another team’s bad contract, who would it be for?
I’d do Duncan Keith |

I'd take Marleau, but I'm sure there's others out there I'm miss lol |

No, but for Toronto I think it is. I'm thinking worst contracts by team. I don't think they should have ever gave him that knowing Matthews Marner and Nylander are due raises and at the time they still needed defense. |

I don’t think they thought there was any chance of signing Tavares. That changed everything. |

I thought of him as well. Others I thought of we're Keith, Dubinsky, Mcdavid and Kovalchuk |

Yeah that too. But I think it still stands that Marleau is now their worst contract. |

I agree. They never would have signed him if they knew about Tavares. Thankfully only one more year of Marleau. |

Oops I thought it was two more haha.Yeah even if they keep him in the off-season. At one more season that's very tradable if need be. |
