Pretty sure most agree with me here. You’re inflammatory and not very insightful with your posts.

I am not expert in this area (kinda like everyone else on here...), but is the general rule of thumb not that the longer the deal the higher then AAV, due to tying him up into possible free agent years? So, $11.63M would be something closer to $13M. They have just signed Tavares to $11M per and have Marner and Kapanen to sign still. If they plan to keep this team together (as Dubas has insisted he would), then they can't just sign everybody to max. term at max. dollars. That much is obvious.
I'd say that if Dubas made an error, it was in signing Nylander the prima donna, daddy's-boy instead of collecting assets while making him someone else's problem.

Sure, the number would have been greater than 11.6 but Matthews is 21 years old. Why take the risk of losing him for nothing at 26? It is clear this is in the best interest of the agents and the player but this will end up screwing the team long term.

It's a terrible deal all around. Terrible. Remember Ovechkin's deal? People thought it was insane at the time and now it's a huge bargain for the Caps. With the US TV deal coming up and expansion, profits will rise significantly over the next 5 years. Matthews is one the league's best offensive players. To give him anything short of the maximum number of years is crazy.

Why are you concerned with losing Matthews 5 years from now, when signing him for more will lose you Marner next year? This isn't MLB and the Yankees we're talking about here. There's only so much cap space to go around and the depth the Leafs currently have either gets managed wisely and with a little finesse, or it goes away. Simple really.

I'm not concerned at all. May in fact just mean that he'll come to Tampa in 5 years. Toronto could easily get rid of that Horton contract by giving teams like the Coyotes or Devils assets to entice them. If it came down to having to spend an extra million per year for having the certainty of having him for three extra years, they should have done that. They can expect to pay about 7-9 million more per year to keep him beyond age 26.

This strategy seemed to work well enough with TB & Kucherov. I think the idea was to have the end of this contract & the end of Tavares' contract intersect each other as closely as possible. The Leafs front office have a few people who had their hands in the creation of the current CBA as well as top cap-geeks. We can all trust that they have a detailed long term plan in place.

No, you've made it quite obvious so far that you are concerned.
A number of us have refuted your argument. Is that what has your concern waning?

Very different. Kucherov signed for three years. The NHL's cap is about to explode in the next 3-5 years. The NHL's TV deal with NBC expires in 2021 which coincides with Seattle's entry into the league. 12.5-13 million for Matthews in year 6, 7 and 8 would have a major steal. Leafs are most likely looking at 20 to keep beyond those 5 years. All while Marner, Rielly, Nylander, Andersen are still in their prime. Good luck with that!

Gotta say, I understood what he meant - that it was a bad Leafs deal.

Though, he probably has very little understanding of the Leafs situation. Even an extra mill or 2 next year on a longer contract will force their hand because of cap situation. It's the following year they get relief. Leafs will have to pay more down the road when resigning him but the alternative was to lock him up on a longer term deal and hurt the team by trading away players the don't want to.

There's no way he was going to accept only 12.5-13 million on an 8-year deal. It would have cost them 14-15.

Well, every year added on to the contract would have added another million. What's 11.5+3?

If they could have signed him for 12.5X8, of course they would have.

Yes....so very different. Years 6, 7 & 8 are awhile away & a long time to wait for the premise of a steal. IMO it is better to stay competitive now as opposed to chasing a theory on what the future will hold. Not saying that you're wrong about cap or anything. But the Leafs front office definitely has a stronger grasp of the situation than you or me. I'm confident that the term of this deal is strategic.

could be crazy but you still need to manage your cap.

Not at all, just fact!

Leafs could pay more, sign Matthews to longer term and have to trade player(s) away or they could pay less, sign Matthews to shorter term and keep team intact.

Was a pretty easy choice.
