Did they ever teach reading comprehension when you were in school? Of course the agents love this. They are beyond happy. Dubas is the one that missed the boat here. Why not go 8 year max? They lock him up for 5 years which brings him straight to UFA. They either give him 20+ on his next deal or he walks.

With the US TV deal coming up and expansion, profits will rise significantly over the next 5 years. Matthews is one the league's best offensive players. To give him anything short of the maximum number of years is crazy.

I am not expert in this area (kinda like everyone else on here...), but is the general rule of thumb not that the longer the deal the higher then AAV, due to tying him up into possible free agent years? So, $11.63M would be something closer to $13M. They have just signed Tavares to $11M per and have Marner and Kapanen to sign still. If they plan to keep this team together (as Dubas has insisted he would), then they can't just sign everybody to max. term at max. dollars. That much is obvious.
I'd say that if Dubas made an error, it was in signing Nylander the prima donna, daddy's-boy instead of collecting assets while making him someone else's problem.

Couldn't do it with the cap squeeze next year.

Once Marleau and Horton are gone after next season, 11.5m opens up. Should be interesting to see what they do with that money
