not really relevant to the blog, but I'm bored at work.

this is my deadline wish list.....trying to keep it realistic.

1. re-sign Stone, 8 years 9 mil, instantly put the C on his chest
2. re-sign Duchene 8 years 8.5 mil
3. fire Boucher and replace him with Crawford for the remainder of the season. in the offseason promote Troy Mann and see what he can do.
4. Trade Dzingel and Ceci to Edm for their 1st, McLeod, and Spooner (for cap reasons)
5. Trade Anderson to Philly for a 2nd rd pick and Elliott (cap reasons)
6. re-sign Nilsson to a 1 year deal and let him and Hogberg run with the crease
7. Trade Paarjavi for a mid to late rd pick
8. play guys like Balcers, Chaplik, and Wolanin down the stretch to get them some NHL games.

that all seems reasonable to me, and sets the team up nicely moving forward.

I don't think any of it is unrealistic.

maybe the trade with Edmonton doesn't happen now based on chiarelli being gone (who knows what direction that team will take)

other than that, it all seems pretty plausible.

2 things.. I would trade Duchene, he will be 29 and starting a 7 or 8 year deal is asking for trouble for a rebuild. His value will never be higher.

does Paarjavi have any value? there must be a dozen players available that are comp. to what he brings

I think you keep Duchene. Ottawa is bad now, no doubt, but all they need IMO to start to turn things around is to bring in a solid Dman, a competent coach with a system that works, and let their young guys develop. there is a lot of young talent in that org. If you get a "too good to refuse" offer for Duchene then I'm not averse to moving him, but he's a legit #1 C and those guys don't grow on trees

I'm not expecting a good return for Paarjavi, like a 5th rd pick or something....I more just want to see him out of the lineup to give his spot to one of the young guys down the stretch.

I think that trade with Edmonton is a good idea. Who knows what they're going to be doing now though.

What's the deal with Duchene and Stone, are they going to re-sign? Extension negotiations with Stone were allowed to start after Jan. 1 right?

if you believe the experts (and say what you will about Garioch, he usually has a good idea of what's going on).....I'd say like 90% Stone gets re-signed, and maybe 60% Duchene gets re-signed.

If we re-sign Duchene, we should trade JG Pageau who should have good value on the market as an excellent defensive #3 centerman. We have Norris, Brown and Chlapik coming in soon.

honestly, I'd explore this option whether or not Duchene is re-signed.

the situation with pageau right now reminds me of Fisher's last season in Ottawa. love the guy as a player, and he brings a lot of intangibles to the team.....but there are a lot of young guys behind him who have the potential to bring more and are being held back because he's here.

the habs would probably pay a premium for him just so they didn't have to play against him anymore.

They definitely missed their "Ceci-Window" with the Oilers... which was almost brewing up into a perfect storm of trade opportunity. Worse yet, by definition Chiarelli being fired greatly increases the odds of Dorion making a horrendous long-term contract offer to Ceci instead.

I don't think it's clear cut....he's definitely down there but there are still a lot of bad GMs employed in the NHL

bergevin, fletcher, benning, etc

he probably is the worst, but it's f-ing close

PD is a great scout... but that's about it. He's not aggressive with trades or signing and he seems to have no interest in building a contender.

To be fair, Dorion is working with one hand tied by the bumhole owner. I'm surprised anyone would want to work for Melnyk.

Dorion can do so much with the budget he's given.

Melnyk had a press conference in the form of an interview with Borowiecki. During the discussion he said that by season end 15 players would be gone from the team that finished the season (June 2018). It appears that they are going to exceed that number. Why do people choose to ignore what was actually said. If you look at what Dorion has done in the face of Melnyk's guidelines on moving players out...perhaps he is doing okay.

there is a big difference between "doing okay" and "doing what Melnyk tells you to do"......and I don't think you necessarily understand that.

Melnyk is an idiot with zero hockey knowledge.........by doing what he says Dorion is hurting the team. but if he doesn't do what Melnyk says, he gets canned.

hence the discussion of dorion needing to be judged with a grain of salt given the fact that he has to do his job with both arms and legs tied behind his back and a blindfold over one eye

History is filled with great stories of leaders being given impossible tasks by unreasonable men. I defer to nobody when it comes to my contempt for Melnyk. In the case of Dorion, I wonder if perhaps he is doing an okay job given the impossible situation he has been put into.

I think everyone agrees that nothing gets any better until Melnyk is gone. Right now everybody can just do the best they can to hold it together.

Certain things can still be done though, like acquiring undervalued assets, or getting better returns for players.

True ... but I believe their salvation is in the draft and player development.

Kinda reminds me of the Montreal Expos in the 90's ... they were great at developing talent but then the richer teams (ie: Yankees, Red Sox, etc) would come in and get our best players by paying them a ridiculous amount. They couldn't compete money wise and were in constant rebuilding, as a result fans got tired of that and gradually stopped supporting the team until it was moved.

Looking at the Sens situation today, I see some similarities to the Expos.

PS: In my opinion, as long as the Sens are located in Kanata, the attendance will suffer which means less money for the team to invest in retaining their best players. I live in Gatineau and I know a lot more people would attend if the arena was closer, I'm sure the same can be said of the people in the eastern part of Ottawa.

Only 1 or 2 wins move up 2-6 spots.
