It would suck for the veteran guys to see the GM "give up" on the season, but it would also be an opportunity to give Demko a run of starts, to see Zach Mac get a few games, to bring Hughes in at the end of the year with no pressure.

1: one has nothing to do with the other
2: i dont recall anyone saying overpaying for 4th liners was a sureproof way of getting a cup
3: paying market value for EK was never the topic of discussion here, paying market value for Erik Karlsson given the current state of the canucks and does Erik Karlsson give the Canucks a legitimate chance at the cup during his contract, that was the discussion.

Vintsy made this exact argument/statement a page earlier. If he gets you a cup in say year 3, which to me is far fetched, but regardless, would it matter in years 4 through 7. The answer to me is no, you dont care what happens if he brings you a cup. My point is, its a stretch to think that the canucks miraculously expedite their rebuild from bottom 5 or 7 in the league to cup champions based off of an Erik Karlsson signing and does his "prime years" really give this team a legimate shot at the cup for the canucks in the next 3 years, and i personally dont think he alone does that.

For the people that are against it. The goal is to win the Stanley Cup. EK get's you a heck of a lot closer to a cup.

A lot of people over time have said they don't care that Chicago and LA are now completely screwed because they won cups.

Signing Karlsson may put Van into cap troubles in the later part of his contract but would that really matter if he gets you a cup?

No you're right, normal hockey operations doesn't stop, but youre entire direction as a hockey op does. Your entire philosphy and how you go into trades/rebuild/drafting/etc does.

Rebuild, well it's going to end at some point. Rebuild's that never end like the Oilers/Flyers are not something I feel like entertaining.

Drafting is as JB said what you are looking at 3-4 years down the road for the players. Not a huge barring on what the team is doing immediately.

Also, What if Van trades Tanev, Granlund to Pittsburgh for Maata, Brassard and Pitt's 1st. Then you can trade Brassard to someone else for a bit more.
