Handling adversity? Do you not remember last year? They had many of the same issues last year, which probably what you are alluding to as snowballed, they are facing this year. Playing a full 60 minute game, 10 game losing streaks, giving up the first goal, goaltending issues...all the same. They also put some of it together to make the playoffs, although I believe that happened on skill alone by their players not structure as a team. I am extremely happy they made the playoffs, but last year was not that good of a year for the Flyers. You would think they would be stronger towards adversity now.

What really changed then?

- Glak18

Do you remember last year? Seriously stop with the condescension. If you actually remembered last year that while the Flyers had some similar issues, it was not even remotely close to the level and multitude of issues occurring this season. From December on last season the Flyers were a top 5 NHL team record wise. Last year was completely different from how this season has gone. The Flyers through most of the season were a top 5 team defensively at 5 on 5 before finishing up 9th overall. This year they were rock bottom. That was due to solid team play. Do you not remember how many games last season the Flyers back from behind? They handled adversity much better last season compare to this season. Night and day.

Like I mentioned in the above post, was their goaltending that much better last year?

Ok, they are going through goaltenders left and right, but they made the playoffs with an injured Neuvirth and an Elliott that looked like absolute crap coming back from core surgery.

Yes it was better. The Flyers have used an NHL record tying 7 goalies this season.

Watching games tonight, teams give up so many chances, that is comsistent. Goalies making good saves is consistent and players making the play to score happening.

Flyers have the first one

And yet they opened the season with the same injured tandem, closed their eyes and pretended everything would be just fine.

Gordon wont stick. He'd have to get the Flyers into the playoffs to make a case. I dont think the Flyers intend to keep him as the head coach or ever did.

Exactly! I couldn't believe they waited so long to put Laughton back at center. WTF!
- easY

I believe the back and forth between positions could hurt any young player. Brayden Schenn was a perfect player but he was asked to split time between center and wing frequently. This is something I don’t want from Scott Laughton who was expected to be a much better defensive center coming out of his class.

Giroux
Couturier
Patrick
Laughton

Make it work.

Elliott played well until the injury.

If he had played that well to start this yer I think things could be different.

To start the year this year it seemed almost every game had a suspect goal against

At this point, I want Jack Hughes, Mac’s contract bought out and all UFAs released via trade or otherwise....Unless Simmonds accepts something reasonable.

That was my point, why could they handle it better last year with the same group then this year? Just because they got lucky? You can focus on only the final results, but you don't go through adversity then magically forget the next year. For a lot of teams that struggle and adversity is what drives a team the next year, but not for the Flyers. Blaming something that was already an issue in the past because results are different leads me to believe there is a bigger issue involved.

Next season is the final year. No point really. Maybe we can ship him to Arizona. they seem to like our sloppy seconds

I miss the years where you knew who our trade partners were. Phoenix was definitely one.

Honestly, I think we overachieved last season. We lived and died by the top line and our Power Play. Giroux’s career high 102 points and Couturier’s career high 31 goals tells the whole story in my mind. There will be no repeat.

Actually things like that happen all the time. Otherwise teams wouldn't fluctuate as much as they do with little roster overturn. It's mental.

I’ve always been a huge fan of fourth line centers who specialize on killing penalties. I loved Blair Betts. Trent Mandeville was a good one. Jimmy Dowd. Claude Lapointe.

Luke Glendening is the only fourth liner even on a bad to average team that I can think of today that plays the role old school and perfectly. I would make a serious offer.

we may have over achieved but to pin the season on two players is an overlook imo. Jake and Ghost both had career years, TK sorta had a break out year, and Provy had the most goals for a dman in the NHL (tied Hedman). And 3 out of those 4 just named are all having a down year this season which is a huge factor.

I think it’s mental. I think the players need to be better. I also think coaching is an issue. We’ve had two different coaches run with a JvR, Simmonds and Weal line this season. That line has been assembled twice by two different men that the organization considered to be Competent Coaches.

I am not giving up anything for Glendening. I actually think the Flyers have that in house with Laughton. Maybe Vorobyev, Rubtsov, Varone.

I feel the Flyers do have role players.

I’m sorry, you’re right but this only adds to my point. It took career years from a handful of players to get into the playoffs last season.

The problem is, Voracek gets paid like an 85 point guy every season and doesn’t present 85 points every year. How often do you see 17 goals from a defenseman every season? Giroux saw 102 points last season, won nothing and will likely never see 102 points again in his career.
