Proposing a William Nylander + Jake Gardiner, for Colton Parayko + Jordan Kyrou trade. Willie will be an 80-90 point guy, so you wanna give this some thought. We have cap room this season and would be willing to retain 25% of Nye's salary this season, plus we'll take Jay Bouwmeester (UFA end of season) for the remainder of this season to make your cap situation work. We would also send Carl Grundstrom and Calle Rosen back your way to sweeten the deal.

The Leafs would be crazy to give up all that. Nylander even up for Parayako is still an overpay but could get done if Dubas was really worried about his defence.

Leafs are giving up too much to get him, in your winner. Toronto is in win now mode. They want to improve their odds to win this season, not decrease them.

Leafs will trade picks and prospects, not core players that play big roles. IF the Leafs make a trade they'll be looking at adding to their team. Not taking chunks out of it.

Agreed, Nylander has been a key cog in Toronto's success this year.

There is literally zero chance the Leafs entertain Nylander, Gardiner, and pieces, for Parayko, Kyrou and a cap dump.

Why would they do that? That makes them a much worse team, easily. It makes their forwards worse in the top 6 and bottom 6. It makes the D worse. The only thing it doesn't manage to make worse is the goalie.

Will be. He's a key cog in the teams core. In previous seasons. This season going forward. In future seasons.

He's no Leivo though. Only 3% the league is as good as that first liner.

Why would you consider nixing a trade proposal because Gardiner is a pending UFA, but not consider the fact that Dubas told Nylander he would not trade him as long as he was GM of the Leafs?

Whether he was telling the truth or not, Dubas would NOT trade Nylander this season at the very least. It would destroy all of the credibility and trust he has built with his upcoming RFAs, other Leafs, fans, and any potential UFA that might otherwise consider coming to the Leafs. Whether he should be traded or not, Nylander might as well be as cemented in as Matthews and Marner.

The Leafs would never make this deal. Not only because it's an overpayment for Parayko but because teams can't retain salary on just one year of a contract. If they're going to retain on Nylander, they'll retain for the full six years.

Can't retain salary for a portion of a contract; it's either for the entire duration or none at all.

Big shock you didn't know this

I like Leivo. the Canucks got a decent young player, who is an unfortunate casualty of the Leafs just having too many good young players.

And by casualty, I'm sure he feels like a casualty right now. Getting given away from a contender to.... well. Let's just say, the Canucks.

Nylander and Gardiner for Parayko and Kyrou is a big overpay.

If anything like that would happen, it would be Kapanen, not Nylander.

What say I? I say the same. It make more sense for the Blues too. If they go down this road it's a rebuild. They would want picks and prospects, or young undervalued roster players as things to build on, not 28 year old pending UFA Jake Gardiner.

"Prock" says the Leafs would be worse off with my trade proposal.
While I really do like Jake Gardiner, players of his ilk (puck carriers, point producers) are highly coveted. He will score big in UFA ($7M?) and I don't believe Toronto can go high enough to keep him - somebody else's gonna overpay for him. So, I have assumed Gardiner is either trade bait before this year's deadline (unlikely), or he walks via UFA like Bozak and JVR (most likely). That said, who would you rather have for the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Gardiner (-100 in game 7 last year, admit it - the man has never "stepped up his game" in the playoffs, he actually becomes a liability) or Jay Bouwmeester - a rock on D. To me, that is a no brainer, it's JayBo. The trade then, simply, becomes Nylander and 2 pieces that are buried by incredible Team depth and may never get a sniff in the NHL for Toronto, for Parayko and Kyrou. Toronto wins this by dealing from a position of strength. With my assumption - Toronto wins this deal. That was my logic.

Lol the winning offer is impossible. You cant retain 25% of one year on a 6 year deal. I thought you followed hockey edlund... guess not!

Rather easily.

This deal reeks a little. Too creative with disregard for actual rules. Plus thinking the Blues would entertain this idea is garbage. They get nothing solid in the return except a 7mil headache. Have to rebuild their defense, with less cap space bottom pairings all over at best. Nylander is good, but like 95% of all Swedes shows up for 60% of all games. If im trading Parayko, i want a Solid roster player at decent cap hit, plus an A+ prospect and a throw in roster defender to cover a portion of the loss to D. Sure the Blues may go into sell mode soon, but you can bet they arent walking away from a RHD of Parayko quality without something good now and in the future.

Something like Kadri, Timmy Lil and Holl maybe.

Lmao, this deal is something that would only happen in a video game...makes no sense and hurts the leafs big time let alone you can’t retain a portion of a contract!
