A few thoughts (please correct me if I'm wrong.. which I may be on all accounts, the CBA is a bit squirrely):

1. If the Dec 1st deadline passes, Lou wouldn't be able to offer sheet Nylander until July 1st. Willie cannot sign an NHL contract if the Dec. 1st deadline passes.

2. The Islanders couldn't even sign Willie prior to Dec 1st as they don't have the compensation picks necessary for the 2019 draft. It has to be their own picks and it has to be for picks in the next available draft (unless there are multiple picks for any given round).

3. If the Leafs were to match the offer sheet they would be bound to the compensation detailed within (in this scenario, 8.1M) -- there would be no further contract talks.

plantheparade didn't mean any of this - he was just trolling. Even he knows nothing he proposed was possible.

From what I understand, he can play in the nhl but isn’t elegible for the playoffs. I could be wrong though. Not the first time today.

You are right about point 2.
I looked at teams with capspace to pull this off, and just thought it would be interesting if Lou would be the GM to do this - didn't check their 2019 picks.

on 1 - I'm not sure whether RFAs can still sign an offersheet after 1st of December; I guess they cannot..

on 3 - I was talking about a 1y contract; so for 2019-2020 Nylander would need a new contract again.

RFAs are ineligible to play if they haven't signed by the deadline date. Bill Ny would have to play in the KHL or my beer league.

Nope, sorry.

plantheparade might not be the brightest little light bulb, but even he knows what he posted wasn't - and couldn't - be true. He's trolled in here before, it's really sad.

EDIT: I think Nylander would still be able to sign an offer sheet after 1st of December - he just couldn't play this season.

So my scenario would still work for a team with capspace and the 1-2-3 round picks 2019.

1. Pretty sure RFAs can only sign between July 1st and Dec 1st... but I couldn't find anything that explicitly made that clear. Seems to make sense though?

3. Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure if you meant the 2019-20 season or not.

I don't think an RFA player can sign any offer sheets between that window (Dec 1st - July 1st). The reasoning, I believe, is to prevent prolonged RFA contract stalemates.

If it was possible it would improve the chances of an offer sheet going through. It would be less likely that a team would match for an ineligible player.

i think you are right.
but since the original team (in this case toronto) would have a 7 day period to match, and there is a 24hr/48hr window for contract registrations and check, that would basically mean a offer sheet 'deadline' of 23/24th of November?

if that is the case, it is indeed one option less (no offer sheet) - and only:
- Nylander signs a new contract with Leafs (24hr/48hrs before 1st of Dec deadline)
- Nylander sits

first option could also be a sign-and-trade.

Every time the Leafs play the Bruins the media asks the same questions to the same players:

"Are you thinking about Game 7?"

And the Leafs players pump out the same generic bullpoop answer: "No, we don't."

I think I'd rather hear some one finally say "Yes. It pisses me off and I'm going to use it as a motivator."
