I didn’t realize Hakstol was the flyers coach and hextall the gm. For some reason I was thinking it was hextall as the coach, and flyers fans called him Hakstol as a joke. So I thought the flyers fans got their wish when he was fired today. I’m just now seeing that they are 2 different people.

Ultimate Lou move:

Nylander doesn't sign a contract before this 1st of December deadline, and Leafs don't trade him to another team:

--> Lou gives Nylander an offersheet for 8.1million for 1 year (most of if signing bonus). Willie gets his money for doing nothing whole season.

If Leafs don't match: Lou can renegotiate Nylander's contract coming season. Leafs only get a 1st, 2nd and third.

If Leafs match: Leafs cannot trade Nylander before 1st of July 2019 - and the new contract talks would start at 8+ million (which young RFA got a lesser AAV than his previous deal??)

A few thoughts (please correct me if I'm wrong.. which I may be on all accounts, the CBA is a bit squirrely):

1. If the Dec 1st deadline passes, Lou wouldn't be able to offer sheet Nylander until July 1st. Willie cannot sign an NHL contract if the Dec. 1st deadline passes.

2. The Islanders couldn't even sign Willie prior to Dec 1st as they don't have the compensation picks necessary for the 2019 draft. It has to be their own picks and it has to be for picks in the next available draft (unless there are multiple picks for any given round).

3. If the Leafs were to match the offer sheet they would be bound to the compensation detailed within (in this scenario, 8.1M) -- there would be no further contract talks.
